A correspondent has sent in a letter from the above National Service  Officer to his parents in 1956. Also a copy of the CO's Orders for an essay that had to be written. Due to the increasing complexity of the Tank Commanders role it was felt that a separate designation for the role should be found! I would have thought that the title Tank Commander summed it up fairly well. If anyone has any knowledge of the family the correspondent would be happy to pass on the original letter to them. The letter can be found at Archive Unknown Sqn.

No knowledge of the family I 'm sorry to say but fascinating to read the letter and  to see things were no different for subalterns all those years ago when it came to junior officers' tasks set by the CO.

Things never seem to change then....How about changing "Tank Commander" to "He who is daft enough to stick head out of cupola during contact", but that would not be accepted, since the "tank commander" had had to accept what he was told, at the cost of his rank . Nothing changes there then eh? How bout a competition to see who can come up with the most obscure, stupid, out of context collection of unassociated words in the English (or any other) language for the poor guy who HAD to stick head out of cupola, at the risk of one or two 155mm rounds coming his way. I suggest we call such commanders as "DUCK man". Or how about "Seat down PDQ man". What difference it makes I know not.....And there was me as a Radio Instructor told to send msgs short, sharp and to the point at all times. Beyond belief? No. this is the Army way of being quick , rather like the salute. Long way UP, Shortest way Down....??? Nothing changes then, since I left in 1969.....You can not beat BULL****.
