And now for something from left field !!

As you know my surname is Riley , so for last couple of years doing the family history bit, birth and death carts etc . Looking at my Irish Grandads date/ place of birth was a couple of hours drive from us in Tipperary thought if a couple of days bad weather can't do owt around the garden let's go to Castlebar Mayo. Mmmm did the Google maps etc just couldn't find Collector Lane anywhere,so when we got here kit in guesthouse a cuppa then of to local paper/ library. Local paper no good, local library came up trumps ( not Donald) going through census and town planning got a hit on the Reilly family of 1872/5 . Then a hit on their place of residence Collector Lane  back in the 1920's it had been renamed and partially rebuild, the new name was Lucan Street , then the penny dropped ,our guesthouse was in Lucan Street, wow or words to that effect. That means I'm in the street where my Grandad was born by a fluke ,one side of it that faces the river has not changed since Victorian times the other half is now a main thoroughfare. Plenty of photos and now got to find out his house number ,but that's when I get home ,then be able to pass on some of the Reilly/Rileys history to the new generation.

Bob, I reckon I'd be a bit worried what I might find if I delved into my family tree - after all, I had an uncle nicked for impersonating a senior RAF officer in London during WW2, a cousin jailed for shooting his wife's boyfriend (!) with a shotgun and finding a grenade, knife & pistol in his car boot, so a plea of " no intention" wasn't really allowed ! I honestly believed if the authorities knew of all this I'd have had my application to become aPrison Officer rejected - no one asked so I didn't mention any of it ! Come to think of it, maybe the Army would have had 2nd thoughts in accepting me too ! John (JKW)

Got some good news today from my nephew his lad Luke who I might have posted before on his problems on finding work on Merseyside through him having an honour degree in electronic engineering. I had spoke to Luke a couple of times about the military as a) a career b) escape Merseyside. Luke picked the Navy, infact he wanted to work on nuke subs as an engineering officer, after failing the selection last year he still decided to enlist . Now after the powers that be have had a look at him in training etc and after he finishes sub training next year ( 50 weeks training in total) he is being fast tracked to a commission. His dad has seen the difference that the Navy have made to him and if his grandfather my older brother was alive he'd be a proud man . This means that the Navy has another Riley serving ,previously we had my grandfather in WW1 and my father WW2 ,yep I was a navy brat .
