Army Number

August 17, 2016

The site receives a number of requests from family members seeking information about Fathers/Grandfathers who have served with the Regiment and I usually refer them to www.gov.uk and search service records. However an Army Number is required and the last person to approach us does not have details of her Father's Army Number. Does anyone know how to find an Army Number? The name is P W D Bailey born 29/09/1934. There is mention of a Tpr Bailey in F&C getting married 5th Nov 1955 but it is not him! Freddy

Freddy, tell her to try Gov.UK it will give basic details including service number but there may be a cost. I am sure that should help but otherwise she should google " how can I obtain my father's service number" lots of sites emerge, Gov. UK is one of them. I went into it and it explicitly includes service numbers as one of the bits of information it is allowed to provide. Hope this helps, best wishes, David.

She needs to access "Requests for personal data and service records" on that site which is the same as the one you mention, there is a proforma  to complete and a fee of £30 is required but it does include service number disclosure, there is a caveat on what they will disclose depending on how long the person being enquirer about has been dead. After 25 years post death the disclosure limit is increased but both lists include service numbers.

Thanks Bob- I have told her to look at her birth certificate. I think she may have the wrong Regiment altogether because her parents met at Stoughton Barracks Guildford which was the Queens Regt depot and incidentally the barracks where Carry on Sergeant was filmed! She also mentions he was in Suez 60 years ago and I do not believe 3DG were there. Freddy

Not at all and thanks for your input in so many ways. We now have an army number so I have told the lady concerned to go to www.gov.uk. and search army service. Cpl Bailey was in A Sqn in 1955 at Bovington as the training Regt with Sqn Leader Maj Spink.

Freddy as I posted about my dads service record , with Google / internet info basically pick the service ,as in my case print the application form fill in with as much info as pos ,having the service number is the important bit ,then if as in the case of the RN there is a fee for the records etc (£30) pop in post then wait and wait , ( ooooh Riley you are awful )
