Beckham And His Knighthood

We are, in this country, masters at knocking down heroes, at dismantling legends, knocking people off their pedestals. In one fell, media induced, swoop Beckham goes from hero to zero. There is no denying the emails he sent. There is no denying his apparent vain glorious desire for a 'K'. On one point however he is right, so many other less deserving toe-rags have been knighted why shouldn't he? Being an ace sports person, earning millions, donating shed loads to political parties, being a political toady, just doing your job (the 'right job')and being exceedingly well paid for it, the list of people gaining knighthoods for nothing special is endless.  What he fails to appreciate however is how debased and pointless the whole charade of honours and awards has become. How much the average person in the street despises the whole system. A man or a woman can spend half a lifetime fostering countless kids, collecting £tens of thousands for charities, dedicating themselves to others etc and maybe, just maybe, they might get a BEM possibly an MBE. Some lard arsed civil servant or side kick of the PM on£100k plus pa reaches a certain point in the civil service hierarchy and gets an automatic minimum CBE more likely a 'K'. The whole system is based on hierarchy, rank, social standing, old school ties, political allegiances and money. So why is DB so obsessed with wanting to be part of this whole meaningless circus? He has a lifestyle most people can only dream of, he has fame and untold wealth, a great family, he has........well everything he could ever want, but apparently not. I think the answer lies in the fact that it is almost always  the unattainable that people want, he has attained everything else he ever wanted so now just being a knight of the realm is the ultimate accolade that eludes him. Sir David Beckham don't ya know! How impressed people would be! No David, they won't be at all impressed, they WERE impressed with your football skills, your likeable personality, your soccer academy, your 'apparent' charity work, your devotion to your family. Now many of them will be disappointed  with you, Another hero falls, another hero is exposed as having human weaknesses and a lust for recognition and reward, why are we so surprised, perhaps most of us aren't!

I always thought Beckham was a bit of a knuckle grazer who could hardly string a sentence together. If you remember when William and Kate were married, he turned up wearing his decoration after the guests were told that there was no decorations to be worn. In fact he was wearing his on the wrong side! Peasant. As for his wife? Words fail me.

David there's a guy called Lennie Henry and as long as "Comic relieve " was going 20 odd years doing the biz for alsorts of organisations from the UK to Africa Lennie was the front man . As you say while lesser mortals got "peerages,K's etc" he got nowt wether he asked for it or not just last year he got a K ,but that was after he'd become a Shakespearen actorrr  and did very well ,now arise Sir Lennie  . Yes there are turds who've been honoured,as you say civil servants, advisors to politicians getting a big pat on the back for just "doing their well paid job" ,these goons never living in the real world . As we have just seen from the Olympics and tennis world if your a winner ( and not on drugs) the politicians fall all over them ,DB is not my favourite player and he loves being a "celeb" now he's finished his footy days ,but he was the corner stone of United (spit spit) more important he was one of the best captains of England . His fault he's married to an ex spice girl and wherever they go they ( him) create news etc for the red top press or the Beeb ,now this e-mail has been released he's become a liability to all things he touches wether charities or businesses. Maybe being a northerner myself you just have to say a "southern git" has got his just deserts .

The 'thing' about Beckham though is his spectacular fall from grace. Alfie speaks of him as a 'knuckle grazer', truth be told with his squeaky Estuary voice and his limited vocabulary he never was Brain of Britain that's for sure. But in a strange way, a way that is very British, his apparent, but now unmasked, faux 'simple boy next door' image was a quintessential part of his charm and allure for many people. That of course is all done and dusted now his exposure as a man who milked charity work to further his own dream of a knighthood exposes him as just another phoney, no better or worse than many other phonies but a phoney nevertheless. Bob, I don't begrudge Lenny Henry his 'K' he spent decades doing charity work, he never conspired to fool the country into thinking he was some kind of a saint when the opposite was true and he has a modesty about the whole thing that is praiseworthy. There is talk of TM drastically changing the whole honours and awards system to stop the abuse of it amidst massive media criticism. I will believe that when I see it.

David if you remember Tony Blair did a similar thing in the last decade . BEM became MBE's ,the same for MM's into MC's ,so another fiddle with it I'm not sure with the way "us" public will see it. Yes there are people out there who do Stirling work for the community, but if you're not nominated you're just another good citizen doing great deeds for no recognition. It seems that being a " celeb" and in the public eye(media/tv etc) gives the recipient a better chance of an "honour " ,what needs to be done is the people who vet who gets what should come from the community as a whole.

Bob, anyone can nominate anyone for consideration of an honour or award. There are several committee stages the nominations have to go through before being accepted, except for the celebrity awards and the ones that are the gift of No 10 and the opposition leader.

David there is also the Royal Victorian Order, mainly for the Queens household etc . That's the one to get as it's Her Majesty who is saying well done and thank you for your service to the Crown and Me  other than the gallantry awards the rest are confetti in my eyes .

I believe that the criteria for recipients of Knighthoods should be that they pay UK tax on all earnings instead of hiding it away in offshore accounts. Branson for a start. Not prepared to do that? Forget the award. Failed politicians should also be exempt. They achieved nothing when their snouts were in the trough so why should they get anything after terms in office. We were at a show some years ago and David Steel was there as the patron. He came over to us and there was shock when my dearly beloved referred to him as David. Shock horror! He's a liberal after all. It was a case of do you know who you're talking to! Flip off.

The only award I would be prepared to give to the "self seeking" bunch of hangers on would be a one ton collar of steel tight around their neck before they would be dropped overboard in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. As for the real people who DO deserve an acceptable award from H.M. no "Rs" lickers may apply, but those real people who are recommended deserve our mark of appreciation. That would shorten the list to a max of 00.9 percent of 1 ..... Better still, drop these awards completely.
