Black Friday

November 24, 2017

Did anyone not know today is Black Friday? I knew, 34 spam emails, the newspapers, TV etc all made sure of that. Black Friday? Where did this phenomenon originate from? Yes, it had to didn't it, America. I googled it and discovered it's the first Friday after Thanksgiving and is called Black Friday because it's supposedly the first day in the trading year when retailers et al begin to turn a net profit i.e. out of the red and into the black. As if anyone is really going to believe that!! My real take on it is as follows, retailers spend the week or so before Black Friday surreptitiously raising prices then, come the day, they reduce those prices to what they were originally or thereabouts and then herald the start of a massive sale, a Black Friday sale. Perhaps that's the true origin of the first day of achieving an actual net profit, the result of all those gullible folk falling for the hype and sales patter. This morning  I asked the manageress in our local Lidl store if she had anything on offer during Black Friday, her response was decidedly unhelpful and I fear my question was entirely misconstrued. No matter it's done now, Black Friday has come and gone. Anyone miss it? Did anyone else really know what it is, where it came from etc? Does anyone really give a damn? No, I thought not, me neither!

Black Friday ? More like Black Fortnight these days ! I also reckon its just an excuse for retailers to get rid of stock they've been unable to sell throughout the year - no doubt there is the odd bargain to be had, but nothing that won't come up again in the Boxing Day sales ( starting BEFORE Christmas no doubt !!). There was a busker in town this morning playing carols on an accordion, what's that all about? My grandkids are going to be disappointed at Christmas this year because I've already forgotten where I hid the Easter eggs under the bonfire.

Just found out emojis don't work on the Forum, & don't even post the words either if an emoticon is included. Never mind, I was basically replying........" LOL"  !! John (JKW)
