Methinks none of us "oldies" have any experience of Chally 2, maybe Centurion or Chieftain but not Challenger  - possibly Tom might remember Chariot 2 !?! John (JKW)

Me thinks seeing the "shining hussars" parked all along area X-ray  decks up awaiting REME help  driving past at a great speeds (20 mph) thinking I'd just spent 12 years with breakdowns of our beloved Chieftains, another expensive toy for the generals. 50k for a Cent  1 mil for a Chiefy,mk 1 now mk2 Challengers costing millions ,BUT no one to crew them ????????

I must admit to you, JKW, that I never used the Challengers, in my day it was Cents and conked out Conqs!!!! I still have the photo of our A Sqn CO and his radio op Paul Savage wrecking an RE Bridge on ex one day, and we all blamed them both being too overweight for the poor bridge..... cos all our crews in sabre troops were the correct shape and size..... And more important, what the blue blazes is Klopp doing wrong, he is heading for the chop if it continues ????

Hi guys. You only hear from me very infrequently, but I couldn’t resist when I read Tom's reference to A Sqn CO and Paul Savage wrecking the RE bridge.

I was that driver. We approached the bridge closed-down. I thought I was lined up.No correction from up top. So up and over. Then we just keeled over. Major Brett (I think it was him) big man, I never known him to move so fast. His first concern was for his crew. After we settled down Major Brett told me to get into another tank and drive for a bit, I said NO Im ok. Then a booming voice from the gods, “NO” TO AN OFFICER GET IN THERE. It was RSM Mills. L.O.L. (not at the time).

All the best Sam Pod.

And as our Conqs, they could hardly get to the tank park gates without breaking down,,,,,,,,,

I see that the MOD have said that there's no funding for the development of a Challenger 2 replacement. The view is to upgrade the turret software and possibly replace the gun with 120mm smooth bore to make it compatible with the rest of NATO. I bet if this was a French decision for their battle tanks they would say "Flip Off" What do the Gunnery freaks think of this. I should also say that there is 4 companies in the running for the upgrades. One being Kraussmaffie. A German company. Mind you when you look at the decision makers ie officers in the MOD. All grunts!
