Good on yer Bob ! Diesel engined cars are NOT the heavy polluters they're made out to be by the tree hugging brigade, in fact the improvements made in their design in recent years with DPF systems fitted to the exhausts etc mean a field full of cows farting cause more damaging pollution than the modern car does ! Certainly in this country current legislation minimises the problem, it's money grabbing councils who jump on the bandwagon in their continued efforts to fleece the motorist by threatening tolls to enter their domains. India, China, Los Angeles etc DO have a problem with air pollution, but it's not just diesels causing it. John (JKW)

India and China's pollution is caused mostly by industry, tens of thousands of old factories burning fossil fuels et al. They believe the west had its shot at polluting the atmosphere in its journey towards creating successful economies China and India think we are hypocrites for trying to get them to stop polluting as we once did. Pollution in the US is also hardly likely to be attributable to diesel cars almost all of my birth family live there, we have spent many many months there visiting and hardly ever came across a diesel vehicle, the yanks don't tend to buy diesel cars as petrol is still so much cheaper there. JKW is entirely correct apropos modern Diesel engines as is Bob re the Govt promoting diesel cars and then doing a volte face on the whole issue. It's all a great con, Kyoto is a farce promoted in its heyday by Fatman Prescott who owned two bloody gas guzzling jags and left more of a carbon footprint than almost anyone else with his myriad freebie global plane journeys. Tax diesel cars entering cities and see how the car manufacturing giants fare!!

On my visits to the continent the diesel car is king , the same goes my trips to India the only place of late were the petrol car is still king is the USA as Benz is still just over $2 a gallon . Both India and China are building a COAL fired power station every other week to electrify their rural areas . These green get togethers are a waste of time all they do is increase the cost utilities and travel for the general population . I remember as a kid back in the 50's we had smog/fog most winters ,but then most houses had coal/coke fires but now we use gas/electric to warm our home ( except rural homes use oil/kerosene) so we are cleaner . The finger now is on the dairy farmers as cattle produce methane ,which pollutes , BUT to produce a 200gramme burger in a lab costs €260.000 ,that's one expensive hamburger and will not be on sale at your local butchers anytime soon .
