Going to the DOGS

October 2, 2020

Watching the news there was an article on dog training, now we know when we travel that sometimes we are SNIFFED by a dog at the airport for drugs , good idea . So some doctor has come up with an idea that Dogs can smell/ detect drugs why not COVID 19 on a person thus they are training dogs to do this . As you can imagine that the dog would be instantly detecting this bug,so you’d not have to wait days if not weeks that you’ve infected . This from I seen is a brilliant idea if it WORKS and could possibly save lives .

"Spotty Dog" as Billy Pownall would say ( his favourite saying to signify a great event ) ! I still wonder whatever became of Billy, no one seems to know. John (JKW)

Not sure he was a Recruiting Sgt in Birkenhead Len, but do know he was stationed at The Dale, Chester as PSI with the TA. I visited him there a few times. I know on demob he moved to Southampton area, working as an Insurance Assessor of new cars coming to market. We exchanged Christmas cards & occasional messages but there was suddenly no contact  - I heard, as you said, he'd moved to France, & also heard he'd become ill, but again, no confirmation of any sort from anyone, Such a pity we lost contact, a great lad was Billy and a good friend. Billy & myself were stationed in CYPRUS (circa 1967 to 69) we used to get drunk together and end up fighting ! don't remember why or how many times it happened ? I do remember we went to "4 mile beach" to have a TROOP long week-end. all of us... ""wife'ies" and all" I wasn't married in those days but I do remember me & Billy waking up one morning - after one of our "sessions" - and grinning at each other covered in dried blood.....etc. "Beastie" Savage was troop leader (As a S/Sgt) I think there was a shortage of Officers at the time ? Anyway, it was "SPOTTY DOG" as he would say and as you remember it John.  Yes......Great days.  Mick.

Thanks for that Len. My last years were spent at Bovington as RQMS (T) of the - then -newly formed BSU (Bovington Support Unit) - Taff Pritchard was my S/Sgt - That was in 87/89, can't remember why we ended up speaking to each other (on the phone) probably one of us on the "BUM" for something or other ? Anyway, that fits in with your last so I hope someone else can throw some light on the subject.  Stay safe, Mick. P.S. I think he got married again after Maggie died. (Any idea where the "Girls" are ??)

Billy did re marry, a lovely lass named Wendy. He became RSM of a TA unit of the RASC ( as it was) & a pal of mine at Walton Jail was in the same unit ( a Maritime outfit), based down in Hampshire, hence Billy's Southampton address, and kept me informed. Being TA though, they only met occasionally, usually at Mess Dinners,  but I know Billy was highly thought of in the TA. The pal of mine left the TA (age ) & lost touch himself, & despite much digging around by both of us, the best we could find was that Billy had left the TA, later became ill, & moved to France for the better weather apparently. That's where the trail went cold, & not heard a word since of either Billy, Wendy or the two girls - I really hope someone somewhere can update us all. John (JKW)

John, I think the RASC combined to  become the RCT and the RAOC in the mid sixties. If I'm right do you recall what TA Unit Billy was actually with as RSM ?   Mick.
