I watched the 2 hour Hillsborough epic last night (on Catch Up) - I hadn't realised just how much Professor Phil Scraton had done to uncover the truth, the man deserves more than just a medal. Whilst Ann Williams & Margaret Aspinall etc also fully deserve total respect for their efforts, I do believe now, that without Prof Scraton's dedicated research and unveiling of the facts, the TRUTH would never have emerged. So much suffering for so long, made so much worse by lies and cover ups by the South Yorkshire Police heirarchy. Unfortunately, many of the decent coppers on duty that day are now tarred with the same brush as the liars in the Force. They were "led" by a weak, inexperienced Chief Superintendent who compounded his lack of leadership by lying about his (lack of ) decision making, and using the media to apportion blame in the most appalling manner. He should NOT be allowed to "retire" as he did on a full pension, but should be held to account in a Court of Law, and be given the most severe of punishments the law allows for his gutless inaction & cover ups that caused so much distress to so many. What a powerful piece of television I don't think anything on TV has had such an impact on me since those tragic televised events when the two soldiers were murdered in Belfast at the funeral. RIP the 96 and now that the 'real' truth is out their loved ones can sleep a little easier in the knowledge that their memories are now untainted. The final chapter of this sorry story must surely be prosecutions of the guilty liars who have hidden behind their rank and privilege for too long.
