Bob, I think it was obvious that the Governments coffers were suffering a huge reduction in revenue with the current system 'cos so many cars these days are in the lower road tax bands - mine is a 1.6 diesel automatic & I pay just £20 per year, whereas my last car (a 1.8 petrol BMW) cost £250 a year , hence me getting rid of it ! At least the system announced in yesterdays Budget is fairer, with those keeping their existing car's paying the same, with any new cars bought post '17 paying a flat rate £140 (unless you're a tree hugger with a purely electric car, paying nothing, or a rich bugger buying a car costing over £40k, when you'll pay £310 on top of the flat rate). He also said (!?!) that ALL money raised via road tax will go into road repairs / building in England, but I also heard that'll only apply post 2020 - he must have whispered that bit ! John (JKW)

Gordon Bennett !!!! I never realised there was such a difference in road tax rates - mind you, during my "tours" of NI, especially on the Border Crossing Points, I don't remember many cars WITH a tax disc, it was usually a Guinness label in the space ! I remember on one occasion in South Armagh, Sat night / Sunday morning, a heavily laden mini van coming up to our Checkpoint from the South a bit fast - it hit a bump just short of our VCP, bounced & literally snapped in half. The occupants, well "oiled", clambered out, kicked the rust riddled wrecked bits once, & proceeded to cross into the North on foot, not in the least bothered !! John (JKW)

John cars in the republic pre -08 ,a little Corsa in excess of 300 euro......they have a tax here called VRT ( vehicle reg tax) so you go to UK buy a motor come back to register ( can't insure a foreign reg car here ) car cost say £7k in UK( over they own price range ) it will cost at least another 1k in euros ,good thing here MOT are every 2 years on cars under 10 years old.....that why I told Evo to make sure his car is owned by him for more 6 months( like our tax free days in BAOR). Here's the breakdown for my Hyundai...UK price £ 9 K.....Irish price 16 K euros ...I kept it  reg in my daughters name etc then bought it second hand 3 years old and had to pay 14oo euros ....did the same with a couple BFG cars in the 70's  ....diesel here is cheaper than the UK , BUT my nearest town ( Big shops) is 12 k's ,so my little i20 dos 65 MPG thank f##k

Yes, David did that got the stain on the 'T' shirt......now how about fixing a sat nav for 'Pluto',journey time nearly 10 years and it's cold up there...the question I want answering how did Walt Disney get that dog from there ???? We in Ireland ( republic) have just been issued our ''Post Code''....the system cost 27million euro to set up BUT ( that word again) you can't put it in a ''sat nav'' as its not compatable ,( 2 weeks ago went to visit my son in Germany ,put his post code on my sat nav took me straight there no bother) so back to Irish one( even the post don't use it) the common thought from all local friends is that they (government) can use it for water tax, property tax and to sell on to other business's ,BUT you have people  in County Clare with a Limerick post code ...its the same as saying Leeds to Manchester....the good thing is you can use you pc/lap top go to Eircode type in the code in search and it will put you on the property ( I think, well they said so,but my WIFI is only at home !!!!!) typical F##k up.....anyway going back to Greece do'es anyone think they'll pay up ???????????

David, Re the Norfolk Broads, my  pal and I, when he was driving Colonel i/c HQRAC 3 Div, and me driving the Brigade Major, in Landrovers, had a very similar experience over the 3 days observing the Exercise being supervised, and with a couple of exercises of our own with the local talent were similarly well looked after!! However. on the second night we went in The Glass Palace pub in the local town, which was empty at the time, in uniform. Barman told us both to stand at the far end of the bar, near the back exit, and told also not to react to anything we saw. We had visions of gigantic cellar rats attacking us. We were in combat gear at the time, and soon were shown what the barman meant! Suddenly a whole pile of G.Is from the local US camp down the road came in. They got their drinks and sat down, but a minute later the local hardknocks burst in and without stopping to get themselves a drink, they launched into the Yanks and all hell broke loose, but we did as the barman said. Stayed at the end of the bar. Fight was halted by the well armed Yank military police, and local coppers. When the dust settled, the local yobs left, while the Yanks sat down again and carried on drinking, inviting Bernie (10H) and me to join them. The barman gave us the nod, and we had a great time with them. This seems to happen every night, with the yokels getting all the flak!! Saturdays were the all  - in no holds barred scrap to tell the world about apparently.

Tom, I remember the Yanks in Norfolk well. They could never understand the dialect of the older yokels but many felt quite at home amidst the incest and banjos!! Deliverance!! You know the score, someone introduces you to their wife and sister and there is only one woman there!! On the infrequent occasions I go back there I am always amazed at the changes. When I was a child growing up there you could walk across the River Yarm, without getting your feet wet, on the fishing boats. All the old Scots fishwives used to sit on the docks gutting fish, the stench was horrendous. They still have JOCK fortnight in Yarmouth, it's a time to avoid the place, no disrespect to our Caledonian friends intended.
