No More Petrol or Diesel Engines !

July 26, 2017

The sale of diesel and petrol engine cars will be banned from 2040 ! The aim is to reduce pollution which, it is claimed, causes 40,000 deaths a year in the UK. I'm not sure how they've proved that statistic, I personally do not believe all those deaths are caused by breathing in engine fumes - the times we used to sit on the rear engine louvres of a Ferret Scout Car or the back decks of both Cents & Chieftains to keep warm yet I know of none of our former comrades who died of respiratory failure caused by polluting engines ! I accept benz can be carcinogenic, but do think the death toll by engine pollution is exaggerated beyond belief. It wasn't too long ago we were actively encouraged to buy diesels by the Government of the day, in the belief they were safer. Now they're not - it's a bit like eggs, statins, aspirins - one minute they're bad for you, the next they're lifesavers. No wonder I'm cynical over the study results dished out on an almost daily basis !

This latest initiative poses further points of view ; 1) the car manufacturers will now obviously reduce, even stop, all their R&D guys from wasting resources on looking at ways to curb these emissions, which over the years has brought massive improvements in the technology, because why should they now bother ?,  & 2) if ALL cars are to be electric powered (even hybrids are banned), then to cope with the extraordinary demand for electricity to "fuel" them that every car in the country will require on a daily basis, the power generating infrastructure will need a massive overhaul - I've not heard any mention of the number of additional power stations that will be needed. It goes without saying that charging points will be needed on every street corner, or on the wall of most homes, and that battery technological improvements will give much increased range, but the power (electricity) must come from somewhere, in astronomical quantities too.

3) How will the oil rich Arabic states survive with , at the moment, both France & the UK banning  petrol / diesel usage from 2040 ? The USA will undoubtedly NOT join in this scheme, but being self sufficient on oil, they won't need the Gulf States to provide it to them, whilst it's yet another blow for Wee Nicola Sturgeon who, despite the truth, still reckons Scotland can survive on it's oil revenues - not any more Nicola, after 2040 anyway !

I'll be 93 by then, and if still around (male life expectancy is now 79 I'm told) I certainly won't be driving, but if I was younger, reckon I'd start saving now for a Tesla car !! John (JKW)

The Government alleges 40,000 people die each year from fuel emissions. The ONS figures (Office of National Statistics) state that UK wide deaths from smoking, alcohol and drugs per annum equate to well over double that figure, 78k, 9k and 3.5 k respectively. But, I have decided I just don't give a damn. Like John I will be in my early 90s when and if this all happens so I have concluded it isn't on my "worry list." Should Fortuna decide to cast her fickle smile upon my already degenerate, debauched and hugely abused body and allow me to be still alive in 2040 I am guessing I might have other priorities in mind than electric cars. My most likely chosen form of transport then will probably be a close call between the hearse and the Quingo, (look it up) the latter is a Tesla for old folk!! Infinitely less expensive though. I read yesterday if this all goes ahead we will need 50 new power stations. We can't even get concensus on  building one!! But like I said, I no longer give a rats arse about it all. We had the fun years with cars, I can still press the sports mode button in the Merc and leave the boy racers standing even if it does cost me my licence one day!! So, tree huggers do your worst, ban all you want I care not a fig, not a jelly bean, not even a used tissue. Ok, ja, methinks I doth protest too much. I might invest in a Tesla next.....................only kidding! .........I think!! ....At present!!

By that time (2040) I'll be on a mobility scooter mmmm but you who are going to come out of electric cars is the Japanese. Toyota at the moment in Ireland you can buy a electric car from them but if you don't like it they'll swap it for a new diesel/petrol or hybrid . The big question is "road tax" ,electric no tax ,and now the government have rerun the tax for cars ( value, emissions etc) as they need the money that low/no emissions have been for the last decade,so how will they fill the gap in monies lost by diesel/petrol cars pay at the moment in 2040  back to my scooter .

A question   the forum.... How far would a Challenger 2 get on a battery ??? Not even to the in camp charging point??? Or a Fighter jet/Airbus passenger jet carry enough batteries to take off, never mind clear the airport area???? I would rather face the possible sickness from their fuel fumes than try to get Challengers to the war zone or Airbus off the ground, never mind clear the airport area....Which world are our governments from????

It's a political statement IMO, with no chance whatever of it happening by 2040 - they're relying totally on the boffins coming up with solutions to the battery mileage range & charging facilities without any Plan B should they fail. They're also ignoring the FACT that already scientists & technicians from a major tyre company ( Goodyear or Continental I think), have  designed a system that means diesel engines can produce a lot less emissions than petrol ones do - to bring it to market is obviously not in politicians interests, probably because there must be more money ( & kudos from the tree hugging brigade) to be made through electricity somehow - massive taxes springs to mind.
