Offensive v Free Speech

May 31, 2016

The 50 old Worcester man who was ejected from a pub for wearing a TShirt that bore the slogan; "Hillsborough-Gods way of helping Rentokil" has been arrested by police for a public order offence. Now I am, and always will be, a defender of people's rights to express themselves without fear of legal repercussions. Freedom of speech is a fundamental and essential  part of our way of life and it differentiates our democratic society from those countries who stifle free speech. But: freedom of speech comes with a personal responsibility to recognise the rights of others  when speaking or acting? It also requires us to exercise the right to free speech within the legal parameters of the law. Being offensive is not illegal in itself and nor should it be so. Most of us at one time or another will have caused offense by something we have said or done without having broken any laws. But; the same laws that prohibit racial abuse or discriminatory language also ban people deliberately causing offense to others to the extent that in doing so public order is endangered. This moron actually had the temerity to have a TShirt emblazoned with a despicably foul slogan wholly designed to hurt and anger anyone with even the remotest connection to the tragic event he so callously slurred. THAT isn't freedom of speech in my book, that isn't having an opinion that someone else might find offensive. It is a blatant attempt to upset many vulnerable, grieving people whilst drawing attention to oneself in some kind of twisted macho manner. I usually defend free speech, there are far too many language police in our society today but I hope this twot  gets his just desserts.

He'll end up getting a gentle slap on the wrist and then being asked for his autograph / selfie by some equally twisted morons. With that said, far more of us are totally in agreement with your views David, even if we couldn't have put it as well - Cheers ! John (JKW)

As JKW says above, I totally agree with your sentiments. I will refrain from entering my thoughts about the culprit, his minute brain, and the out of context message on his T shirt.
