Plastic Bottles !

September 7, 2017

As anyone who watches Sky News will testify, they have a campaign highlighting the disgusting amount of plastic bottles & packaging polluting the oceans & rivers of the world, including the waters in & around Britain.

Having seen the evidence they have "produced" on tv, my question is this ; how come, when we're recycling more these days than we ever did in the past, that these bottles etc end up in the sea ? Surely it cannot ALL be thrown overboard from passing ships ? I accept that more plastics are used in bottling / packaging than hitherto, but that does not explain how & why it ends up in the oceans, particularly as practically everyone I know recycles them properly. If it's those "damn foreigners" chucking them into their waters, maybe the campaign should be directed at them !! The proposal to start a bottle deposit scheme is a good way to reduce the pollution & wastage, although as a wee lad I liked the plan because it supplemented my pocket money, especially the big soda syphon bottles which yielded 5 bob at a time ! In Germany cans for drinks are becoming rarer by the day, all plastic and glass drink bottles have a deposit on them. Every mid range shop/store or above has automated bottle banks, you deposit the empty bottles, the machine sorts and counts them and produces a ticket to collect the money at the till. Almost every German, perhaps not unnnaturally, religiously uses the bottle banks.

80% of plastic in the world's ovens emanates from land based activities. There is a mass of plastic floating in the Pacific Ocean the size of Europe. Anyway, plastic blown by the wind from landfill sites, carried by rivers and estuaries  into the oceans and seas, airborne from harbour based waste sites, blown into the atmosphere from ships being laden with waste for disposal, dumped waste from some of the island paradises it all adds up. Less than 20% of plastic in the oceans stems from liners etc. I just googled that for you John so I can't pretend that came from my own knowledge base. I watched a programme some time ago about the Maldives I seem to recall, they dump all their rubbish onto a floating waste mass in the ocean. You can walk across it it is so dense. Seems lots of it breaks away from time to time. Best I can do!

Cheers for that David - maybe Sky should direct their campaign more forcefully to other areas of the planet too, it's not all our fault here in Britain ! John (JKW)
