Just so I don't upset John (JKW) to much and to keep everything in context I would like to say a thankyou to David for the reply to my "off the subject" question that I posted in "Odd  jobs". Yes it was a scam that was set up by YOU ? and Maj John Tyson? (RIP) I believe. I do recall ranting on a bit by telling you (using very inappropriate language for a SNCO to Officer "conversation") that I was not very happy about being "Posted" to Kirkcudbright when I had asked for a posting to "Bovvy" for myself and possibly Taff Pritchard" - Both of which....somebody!....You? - managed to achieve. The reason that I mentioned JT (RIP) as your "Co-conspirator" was that I can recall all the "Guffawing" and the "Steady on there RQ" ( in that inimitable voice of his)  that was resonating through the walls/hatch that we shared. Thanks David you did us Both proud.

Mick.

PS. I do recall a "Doctored" posting order ?

Gadzooks I had completely forgotten that lol. Yes there was a fake posting order, I got the M&RO postings guy (XRH and an old chum) to send it. It was JT’s idea (R.I.P.) and to be true to his memory he did make sure your posting to ‘Bovy’ was in the bag! It was your afternote about the fake pisting order that triggered my (failing) memory. I knew you from our days together in training at Catterick and I only ever saw you really belligerent on 2 occasions. The posting event as detailed by you above and once on exercise (when I was HQ SSM )  after you got very drunk at an Endex p*ssup and were resisting all entreaties to go and lie down. You might not recall the latter event lol but I did manage to calm you down and I KNOW you were drunk because you paid me a huge compliment lol. You said ‘some people think you are an ar*e but I know you are a f*cking good bloke’! Or words to that effect.See how you have now awakened my memory bank! Apropos JT, I’m sure you know we were good mates. I was one of only 2 from the regiment who attended his wedding to Joan in Southport. I drove us both there from Tidworth and we stayed at OB Kelly’s B&B. I had never met Brian Kelly before that but he was a great host and a brilliant raconteur. His wife was a lovely, charming woman and extremely kind. They refused all offers of payment even though we were occupying guest rooms. The reception was in Joan’s mum’s back garden, Ben Woodall (R.I.P.) was best man. I last spoke to John and Joan  ( by telephone) just before he left for Spain, must have been in the late 90s. I heard he had a heart attack whilst watching football in a bar in Spain. Under that gruff exterior was a very kind and decent guy as I’m sure you know. As an aside when I saw the heading of this post I KNEW what it would be about lol. Stay safe Mick. Best wishes D.

Thankyou David. Mary said that it was "strange that TWO of my former "bosses" in the Regt both married a former teacher of Matthew's (our Son). She has told me that Diane Graham (Marty Grahams wife) taught at "Robert Browning" in Sennelager  (which I knew about) and that Joan Tyson taught at "Bishops Park" Paderborn. Now David I have a couple of questions for you to "pick your brains about" what was Joan's name before she married John Tyson ? and did she indeed teach at "Bishops Park" ? Mick. P.S. When you said that John Tyson  (R.I.P.) was a kind and decent man you don't know "the half of it"......or do you ?

Joan was head teacher in Paderborn and I’m fairly sure it was Bishop Park. JT met her at a ‘do’ in the STC mess where I think she lived at that time. I did know her maiden name but for the life of me I can’t recall it. I remember she had a bad crash in her VW Scirrocho in Tidworth (?) that left her with a limp. Apropos your last sentence, I was Fam S/Sgt when JT came back to RD commissioned. I was working for John Barnes who doubled up as FamO until then. I did NOT want to work for JT and John Barnes said to give it a go and if I had problems working with JT to let him know. As it turned out I got on with JT fine. I worked with him for about a year before going to Zimbabwe and then becoming C Sqn SQMS. He and Rosemary ( they were still together then) looked out for Veronika and Diana while I was away in Africa. I next had dealings with him when he was A/Adjt and he kind of looked out for me career wise. Then, when I was commissioned, we started playing golf together, and the 4 of us socialised fairly regularly in Tidworth and Fallingbostel. Joan had JT right where  he belonged lol I always thought she treated him like an errant schoolboy at times. Anyway,  the answer to your question is, he was always kind and decent to me. I know he was much better to have as a friend than enemy but I may well not know ‘the half of it’. My maxim in life has always been to judge people on how they were with me and he was always okay with me. That’s not me being over defensive about him Mick, it’s just my personal experience of him.

On the contrary David, There is no need to defend JT (R.I.P.). But you were wrong about him being a decent guy.....In my opinion he was a very, very, VERY decent man indeed and I owe him EVERYTHING. Mick.  stay safe.

Yes, Mick,  I think I picked up the wrong nuance from your ‘you don’t know the half of it’ we are clearly kindred spirits in our thoughts on him.

I had JT as the SSM of "D" Sqn during my Edinburgh/ Cyprus & Gosford Castle (NI) days and like everyone, knew his bark was always worse than his bite, but a decent guy none the less. During a patrol in South Armagh I sliced the end of my finger off, & motored back in the Ferret with blood pouring down my drivers neck. It had been reported over the air, but typically, by the time I'd got back to Gosford the rumour mill had me down as having my whole arm amputated ! JT, immediately on seeing the truth, got on the phone on to my wife Carole in Germany before the rumours got out of hand and reached Sennelager, so full marks to him for that. My only criticism is the way he conned me after my demob, requesting all my WO 1's uniform (much of it bought by me) and when payment was due to me responded with "You're not getting any, you've had enough off this Regiment". That did leave a bitter taste in my mouth I must admit, but I should have known ;  JT, for all his good qualities, was well known ( since The Dale days) for sharp practices over money., but let bygones be bygones, he was otherwise a good guy.
