Bob, My Dad served in the Arctic convoys too, and got close to freezing to death several times, but he also had a few trips to the US and Canada to make up for it. He also lost a good number of his friends too, also serving with the Alfred Holt Line ships and others. Like all of them, he just got on with it. Unlike the parasites we are fending off right now. The good thing from the convoys west was that we sometimes got the US and Canada comics, IN COLOUR!!!!! Never got any Russian ones, double dutch to us..... Dad was from Sunderland (the Mack'ums)  and an uncle was a Tak'um, a seaman from Newcastle. And an uncle was from Gateshead, but he was in submarines, (No, not all at once!!!)
