Somethings never change

July 27, 2016

Just been reading an article in the Daily Telegraph about a fire in the RAC officers' mess in Bovington. It seems two young officers attending a 'Father and Son' mess night decided to settle a grievance with each other. Kayaks in the swimming pool and flares at 2o paces were the order of the day apparently!! So, the 2 numpties are afloat in the pool armed with their flares which they fire at each other. One flare enters the mess building through a window, fire piquet called out, can't extinguish the fire so fire brigade attend. Lots of fire damage BUT an army spokesperson said the matter was being treated as high jinks rather than criminal damage! Just as it would be if a couple of troopers had set the NAAFI alight in similar circumstances. It's refreshing to see,in an ever changing world, that the good things  the things that really matter, have withstood the test of time!!! One rule for ....................!!!!

Or the VW Beetle that "dived" into the camp swimming pool in Detmold !?! Only cavalry officers could have such "high jinks" & get away with it. I do recall one however, who fired a pistol in the Officers Mess - his "ceiling" rank was fixed forever, and Major was his absolute limit for his alleged "high jinks", despite a long (& some might say, but NOT me) distinguished career . When I was SO2G3PInfo at Corps Headquarters I had a meeting each Monday with the SIB detachment commander who briefed me on all the untoward events  in the Corps area reported that week that were likely to attract media attention. . Many such incidents were centred on officers mess activities and these invariably involved guns, violence, naked women, strippers, swimming pools and vehicles of one description or another. I confess my voyeuristic alter ego enjoyed these meetings the only down side being I was absolutely not allowed to tell anyone else the juicy details I had been made aware of. The down side of it was trying to convince the media when they got wind of whatever had happened that it had all been wildly exaggerated and the disdain on the Corp Commander's face when I was obliged to give him the sordid details. It's a hard life but I guess someone has to do it.....sigh!

On the line nothing never change, watching Wright on channel 5 this morning ,you know they ask their viewers to ring in on current subject in the news to have differant points of view .....so the subject France's relationship with the U.K. ( English) the usual talk with DeGaul not allowing the UK into the then common market, wars since 1066,Napolean etc oh and kicking the Natzi out . Ok get to the point Riley ,a jock rang in stating that Scotland and France have been very close since since the English kicked their catholic King out in the 17th century ( Bonny Prince Charley etc) and in past years the Scots had duel nationality of French/Scottish, and they the Scots (careful on this word ) "Hate "the English as they wont allow the Scots their freedom . If my history teacher was informing me about the Union of the early 1700's that the Scottish Parliament of the day needed to join with England/Wales/Ireland as they were bankrupt ,sound familiar . Why and this is puzzling Why do the Jocks dislike ( notice softening ) dislike the dreaded English so , yes I've been to Scotland ,yes it has beautiful scenery ,mountains ,lochs ,oh and monsters . But outside of the large cities its spearsley populated except for midges ,similar to our Lake District ideal for getting back to nature , so again Why the dislike ,you can't keep blaming Edward 1 for ever for their woes . Personally like back in 2014 if they want to go ,GO but for fecks sake stop blaming south of the border for your fucked up government ,you voted them in .
