Charlie, I know that Billy Swannick!!! To put your mind at rest, Billy Swannick of 3DG and his younger brother John were both in the Stables when I first arrived in Tidworth in 1960. Billy I know little of, but John and I were great friends. He asked me to help him take the ponies out for their morning exercise about 2 months after I arrived from Catterick, but when I said I had never ridden brutes bigger than seaside donkeys before he assured me I would be OK. Mistake No1! Mistake 2 was when we got over the Salisbury road, he encouraged the brute I was on to move a bit sharper with a bit of a smack with the riding crop. Mistake No 3 ! ~It started PDQ along the track. How I stayed on board God only knows, but I did, probably with eyes closed and screaming STOP you B****RD. I survived!!! Harry passed away quite some time ago, and John died a couple of years or so ago. I live in Chester.Funny thing is that I booked a window cleaner, and when he first came he spoke with a special scouse accent, from the New Brighton area of Wirral. And when he spoke to me after, I recognised the accent, then when he said he was from New Brighton, I asked him if he lived anywhere near the Swannicks had lived, Then the bombshell , he said "I am a Swannick, and John was family". Small world eh? We often have a good chat whenever he comes to do the windows now, we chat away, so I may go up to New Brighton to see the guy for a pint or ten... and meet more Swannicks. I will keep you informed!!

Tom,Thanks for your reply, I drink in the Perch Rock pub just off Victoria road New Brighton, I'll be seeing Billy again, he was in the army but he was in the infantry and he's from Birkenhead, so he must know who we are talking about, funny old world, maybe Colin Butler might pick this up.

Tom, My memory is not as good as it should be, but, sitting down and thinking about Swanick(one 'N') I remember going to Birkenhead boys club, this must have been 1960, the boxers from the area were taking on the boys club and Swanick was in the party, whether he boxed or not I can't remember, we had to sit in the front row looking like soldiers, then we had the rest of the weekend off, this was part of the bribe to get us to go and represent the Regiment, all I remember about the time at Tidworth that it was pretty boring and we were glad to take off and head for Aden, I remember spending my 20th birthday on the troop ship.

I was in Aden & KUWAIT AT THE SAME TIME AS I know Billy Swannick from Aden and Kuwait. I was attached to C Sqn in Recce Troop from RHQ. After Aden I was posted back to RHQ and I lost touch with Billy. I have got a photo of him taken in the Sqn hanger in the Kuwait army camp. He had a close call when one of the lads had a negligent discharge with his Sten when he was cleaning it. Luckily enough Billy was kneeling down with his legs open and the round went through the gap. It was a bit of a laugh at the time.

The Swannick I remember best is not Billie, but his brother John, who passed away some time ago. John was in Stables Tp, in Tidworth in 1960 and on, as was his brother at one time. John had a running battle with one of the big brute horses belonging to a Tp Ldr. It used to kick or lift John up and toss him out of the stable. But J got his revenge every time.... ( do NOT ask !!!) Later on in Tidworth, I helped John taking the nags out for exercise at weekends, across the Salisbury road, into the woods where the nags did more than a trot along the track. Good memories, but sad about John.
