The Syrian Debacle

October 12, 2015

So; Russia is bombing anyone and everyone who opposes the Assad regime, including, but not exclusively, IS. Well blow me down with a feather who would have thought that might happen! Russia is an ALLY of Syria. It has important naval bases located there. Russia knows NATO is indecisive, impotent and has no stomach for a fight after the Iraq and Afghanistan fiascos. I am no fan of Putin, he is a despot and I believe he strives to recreate the former glory of the erstwhile USSR. BUT; he has learned to choose his wars. He has annexed The Crimea and claims the moral high ground there because Kruschov did, after all, consider it a useless piece of land and, despite its inhabitants ALL being Russian, he simply gave it to Ukraine. Putin simply took it back! His support for the Ukrainian rebels in the southern parts of Ukraine is illegal and against every UN charter that exists. Is he bothered? Not a bit, he knows we will do nothing about it despite the belief we have that he has expansionist ideologies for other eastern European countries. I digress. For all his aggressive ways and sabre rattling Putin is at least doing something in Syria rather than just spouting rhetoric and hyperbole. For our part, we have to come to terms with the fact that Assad is not going to be disposed any time soon.........if at all!! We have to accept that he is, by far, the lesser of the two evils. We have to learn the lessons from Iraq and Afghanistan, we have to start recognising that democracy is OUR way of life and isn't necessarily right for every country. We have to accept that western interference in many countries HAS resulted in the usurping of the erstwhile dictators we fought against but they have been replaced by far worse regimes.

I believe we should unite against IS. We should forget about deposing Assad. We should deal with the most pressing, the most dangerous and the most horrendous danger we face first. We should look at the mess Libya is in after we urged and supported the uprising there. The people of Syria need an end to the war. That war will never end until IS are decimated, not just defeated but wiped out.

Fortunately it seems there are enough Labour back benchers who will support the PM's proposal for us to bomb IS targets in Syria. What WILL be interesting is to see how we interact with the skies full of Russian planes with entirely different targets, not to mention the US et al. BUT; for all that I sadly do not believe we will ever bomb IS out of existence. Every soldier knows you can capture ground with artillery and aerial bombardments but you can never hold it without boots on the ground. IS know that is unlikely. They will withdraw for a while, wait out the bombardments and then return. Just as the Taliban have done in Afghanistan, just as we always knew they would, just as they always said they would.

David, I have to congratulate you on a very comprehensive overview of the situation in both Syria and the Ukraine.   Your appreciation of the political field is (in my opinion) an accurate estimation. I mere mortals such as we, can see the overall picture and to some degree, its solution; then why cannot those appointed to lead us see that too. My concerns for our grandchildren grow by the day.

Okay, yes Las Vegas calling, David I've been monitoring the site from afar ( and enjoying the night life) it's great having an English paper app allows me par ooze it anytime anywhere. So when all those people were killed in Turkey I turned Fox News on in my hotel room,a few seconds ,okay maybe 35 or so and that was it.Most Americans think Turkey is what they eat at thanksgiving, they (god bless them) have No idea on what genie George W and Tony have let out the bottle, also they don't fuckin care ,as long as they can have their debate on who the   a) next president is  b) next speaker is (who or what is a speaker ) .....they've 24 hours of Trump vs Hilary , so the rest of the world will be dealt with after November.   Now Vlad the impaired (Putin) has been working behind the scenes , he has the Ukrain ( east bit ) also a deep water port in the Med (Syria) and as long as he's breathing he ain't going to give either of them up , so it doesn't matter wether its commercial airlines or good Muslims he's going to bomb the shit out them.   Accurate to a T ,we have not learned lessons of the past , crusaders got their noses bloody how long ago ,you see the Saudis sitting back and just letting the West make fools and lots of dead bodies .I made a comment a few posts ago about what would solve the problems out there but we have too many liberal minded left thinking stupid bastards in power .......if the powers that be namely ISIS wants to live in the 6th century then use the device that can put them there ,it's a bomb ,let them have a desert ,but there's oil there so we play catch up ..this subject matter is going to run and run till we have a leader who will ????? To be contd

The big problem is that whilst countries in the middle east are living in the present, their brains are still in  11th century mode, and they can not see that their actions are totally alien to the modern world.  They have no clue on how to behave in a 20th century world, and all its cultures. IS and all its branches have not thought they must change or in the end be eliminated by the west. The only fly in the ointment is Putin, he is just as mad as the middle eastern countries. I have, and always will, believe their brains have been scrambled over millenia by the sun. I know that in the short time we were in El Adem, my head got really hot in  seconds if I removed my hat, (no silly comments there please!!!) so it must be even worse for the Arabs etc who have been in the middle east for thousands of years, so their brains are addled well and truly by now. The other big problem is how the west react to the proof that a Russian missile brought down that Dutch passenger plane over Ukraine, while on a recognised flight path. A slapped wrist no doubt.... Hey Ho, another day of madness.
