Bob, I signed up with Facebook some time ago, which lasted a day and a half, because I was getting abuse from all over the place from people I did not know, and who did not know me. I did not even suggest people contact me, since I thought that with so many of our old regt on the site I would be in with the right people, but all I got was foul abuse from complete strangers, so I signed out right then. These loonies only send these msgs to folk they do not know just to muddy the air, and prove how rediculous and brain dead they are. I thank the lord that their behaviour is not reciprocated on our site.

FB is fine providing you put security measures in place, tightly control access to your pages and are careful who you accept as a "friend". I use it to keep in touch with my many US relatives and I accept NO other "friends". Like all social media sites FB is abused by some, it does encourage freaks, trolls and weirdos,  it does allow people to hide behind cyber space and be vitriolic, offensive and plain nasty, without having to face the consequences but that is just a sign of the times, unfortunately. Many people use social media sites as some sort of cathartic diary account of their, mostly boring, lives  sharing their daily thoughts and concerns, telling the world what they are doing, where they are, who they are with....all pointless and inane stuff but generally innocuous. The modern trend for "selfies" is something I simply don't understand, how have we evolved into such a vainglorious nation of people fixated with posting rotten pictures of ourselves every 5 minutes. Interestingly enough the subject of FB came up at the last branch dinner I attended. It seems it is THE  communications tool for the majority of ex Regt members of my own era. It explains why the SCOTS DG media site is the failure it is!! Anyway; a group of us were sat in the bar afterwards discussing the vitriol one of those present had experienced from one or two ex regimental members apropos Scottish independence and the apparent vitriol spewed forth about the English. I hasten to add I was the only non "jock" in the group so it wasn't a load of grumpy English people moaning about the Scots. Lots of nastiness apparently!! So that sort of thing isn't the sole domain of the younger, shall we say, less refined cohorts of society. To be perfectly honest I suppose this site is our own (somewhat refined)  FB or twitter version of social media. We (myself at the forefront) witter on about all sorts of things, we exchange opinions and viewpoints, we pass comment on any and everything, sometimes they are erudite thoughts other times inane or just funny!! The difference is WE are mostly from a  cohort of society with like minded, some might say old fashioned, ideologies and behaviour patterns. We are bound together by a common theme of cameraderie, loyalty and friendship, no trolls or weirdos amongst our membership thank the good Lord. Ok, Ok  I know I CAN be a bit odd at times. Lol. The point is social media sites CAN be very helpful, they CAN be an excellent communications asset BUT you do need to be wary about the nutters out there who can and inevitably will abuse the facility. |As an aside ; I never cease to wonder at the vast numbers of people who post that they are going on holiday for two weeks to some exotic location. I often wonder if they go the whole hog and leave a sign on their front door, "YES WE ARE NOW IN MEXICO PLEASE HELP YOURSELVES" The same people often post real time "selfies" of themselves on the beach in Cancun or The Maldives. Just to make sure people absolutely DO know their homes are left empty at the time. On reflection, perhaps THAT is the point of "selfies" Have a good one!!
