Today’s The Day !

June 7, 2017

Well, tomorrow (Thursday is anyway ! ) the day of reckoning, with the results in the early hours. Has TM blown it with that damn Manifesto, basically turning away her previous core voters over the so-called "Dementia Tax" debacle, the U Turn (which impressed no one), and what amounted to a lack lustre performance with her campaign ?

On the other hand, Corbyn has seized the moral high ground and taken advantage by promising the earth to everyone not earning £80k, nationalising every utility & rail company, keeping the Triple Lock, and promising NOT to raise any taxes for 95% of the population ! Despite stating Labour's plans are "fully costed", they just cannot fulfil these "promises" without MASSIVE borrowing and taxing businesses so heavily they'll up sticks & emigrate, leaving behind many of their employees on the "dole". He's certainly raised his profile, and increased his popularity, yet no one who has served in the Armed Forces could possibly vote him into office because of his association with the IRA, his gutless approach to defending our country, his (& McDonnell's) Marxist views, and until today, his support for Diane "Disaster" Abbott.

Surely common sense will prevail, and TM will get a decent majority (50-70 seats ?) and then take us forward into meaningful Brexit negotiations. If so, I hope she's learned a thing or two about not taking things for granted in the future - give the people a little slack, and stop preaching the "austerity" line all the time, we ALL deserve some concessions and if it means a slightly longer period before the books are balanced, so be it - she could always take some (all?) back from the Overseas Aid budget. Your words resonate with me John and echo my own misgivings. No one has gone into an election in recent years with a bigger forecast majority than TM. Her lack lustre campaign, the u-turns, the 'dementia tax' the downgrading of the triple lock all played into Corbyn's hands, his support has grown immeasurably because there are so many gullible fools amongst us. She WILL win, I am in no doubt about that but as you say without a decisive majority it would be a hollow victory and a potential disaster for the country. I am fully expecting an SNP initiated 'progressive alliance'  with Labour and the Lib/Dems to form in opposition in an attempt to gain some vestige of control over Brexit. A strong majority is vital. I confess my erstwhile faith in TM's leadership, her resilience and ability to take the country with her has diminished over the past month or two. The Tory campaign attempted to base itself on honesty and integrity, not promising huge give always that the country can't afford. Instead many interpreted it as complacent, doom and gloom, a return to greater austerity and full of u -turns on previous pledges. Meanwhile Corbyn promises free everything to everyone, huge taxes on the rich and companies, nationalisation of transport services, £billions for the NHS and education, none of it properly costed or financially viable as you say John, but like I said there are so many gullible fools who believe him. I am forecasting a majority of less than 50 seats for TM. I hope I sm wrong, I really do!!!

Maybe the powers of the sane and normal people of this country of ours will wake up and persuade the unknowing of our realm to get real, I have felt doomed ever since we had a mad day AKA T'election.... but maybe this is a communal nightmare which will vanish when we all wake up???? And Bob, I have felt doomed, doomed I tell you, ever since the cat next door did a whoopsy in my garden.... Roll on sanity.... Tom
