The first ever speeding ticket in the UK was issued in 1896 in East Peckham in Kent. Walter Arnold was easily 'caught' travelling at 8mph in a 2mph zone by a policeman mounted on a Dunlop pushbike.

Might be fun if folks came up with and shared some equally trivial facts. Just a thought to lighten the mood and stimulate comms.

During WW2 clothing rationing was implemented in June '42, with petrol ('39) & food ('40) already in existence. Each adult was issued with 60 Clothing Ration coupons, to last for 12 months. A raincoat used up 18 coupons, trousers 11, although a football shirt only 4 !! Anyone on here remember this !?! John (JKW)

An IQ question heard today, probably best for David with his accountancy background, to answer : A man buys a bat and ball for £1.10p - if the bat cost £1 MORE than the ball, how much was each item ? It's not as straightforward as it seems ! PS Not enough to hazard a guess, please explain your answer ! John (JKW)

Rationing..... I remember my Mum with a pair of scissors cutting up the coupons for me to do the shopping at the local store ( coo-op Borough Rd Birkenhead, divvy number 98023) . Our local milk man Brauns would sell rabbits under the counter every now and then. From I remember the only thing that wasn't rationed was Coke from the gas works behind Central station in Birkenhead, take a pram 2/3 big bags and push it home .

The answer to Jkw's question is: the bat cost £1:05, the ball 0:5p. The trick is in people's natural propensity to say £1 for the bat and 10p for the ball.

The answer to Bob's question, apropos Cock Robin,  is very rude. Or at least the version I remember.
