What Defence?

September 20, 2017

I recently read an article that stated more than half of our depleted naval warships are out of action or lying idle in docks due to crew shortages/ lack of skilled staff or because there is no money to fix them. The army is apparently in a similar sorry state and is haemorrhaging skilled and experienced soldiers leaving. The RAF is in an even worse state according to their bosses. Out of curiosity I looked up what the US spends on Defence against what we spend. Given Trump's recent criticism of NATO allies not fulfilling their pledge of 2% of GDP being ring fenced for Defence, I thought it might be an interesting exercise. Turns out the US is just passing legislation to agree an 8.35% of GDP pa expenditure on Defence. That's more than 700 billion dollars or about £560 billion. We spend about £36 billion pa and claim that to be the 2% of GDP we committed to. Many UK experts question the veracity of our figures. The point is, how have we allowed ourselves to denigrate our once outstanding British Forces to their current abysmal state. This whole austerity thing just doesn't gel with me. We can still spend £12.5 billion pa on overseas aid, the Government can throw the DUP a casual £1 billion bung, there IS money about it's just a question of where it is being spent. Patently not on defence !!

The politicians/ government think that because we have NUCLEAR WEAPONS no one will attack our interests mmmmmmmm tell that to London/Manchester over that couple of months . Why if the United Kingdom goes to critical condition, the Military are/can be put on the streets of our town/ cities, now at the moment those services are in the Carribean helping with hurricane relief. The elastic band can only stretch so far before it breaks ,we all know how long it takes to train/ replace a service person, especially now they are more gadgets to play with .
