What Have You Kept ?

May 8, 2017

I bet a number of us still have the odd item we kept from our Army days - I know some still have a "compo" tin opener, others an Army Issue clasp knife. Me ? I still have, & use, my issue boot polish brushes, the backs painted black with my "last 4" in white on the edges ! The question is ; what have you kept ? John (JKW)

My mess dress still hangs in my dressing room cupboard. In the attic is a Bergen, a Kevlar helmet, a DPM parka, flying boots I acquired from a AAC QM and that I wore instead of the normal issue ones, my whip, some oddments of (now probably moth eaten) lightweight trousers and combats and a tin box in my study full of buttons, badges, my medals, epaulettes etc. Much of this is left over from my 6 years post regular TA service!

Loads of photos from time in 3DG, memories, and thanks for all the banter and comradeship. Also badges, titles, Regimental mags from 196o's, and hatred of hairdressers. (anyone who was in 3DG at the time will know what I mean!!!!). For their friendship too. However, there is just thanks to all members . Personalities like "The Gun Barrel Kid!!!"  Tom

I had loads of Army stuff when demob time came around - much of it (Mess Dress, exercise kit etc) I gave away to guys still in service, but I still acquired plenty to take to local car - boot sales, DPM parka's & socks especially, snapped up by fishing fanatics. I was also asked by a certain QM (ex 3DG)  via an "on leave" Graham Pierce (RIP), for all my RSM's kit, including the special shoes, full uniforms, shirts, ties, hats, badges, Sam Browne, even my socks, for which  he'd pay me after he'd sold it all to the young Ruperts. Graham duly took it back to JT, RIP,  (oops, the QM), and on enquiring many months later where my cash was I was informed by the QM that I'd "had enough off the Regiment during my service, and wasn't getting any more !" I was reliably informed by a friend that, when he became RQMS, none of my kit was in store, so had obviously been sold off - the QM, IMO, was  a robbing barsteward ! John (JKW)

Sad to hear that really John.  John Barnes, in complete contrast, gave me his complete mess kit  and a fairly new Officers' SD when I was commissioned along with a load of other stuff. He refused to take a penny for any of it which would have cost me a pretty penny even second hand!

The 3DG QM you must be referring to was always a bit bent if it is the one I am thinking of.  It was a good job we had Dick to keep him from robbing us blind!! He would rob a Vicar if he thought the good Lord would not punish him.... But I even went to his funeral service !!! .... silly me, shows how naive I was in those early days.....

All those cracking memories of good and bad times, unfortunately I take the bad times to heart, however the good always outweighs the bad, and I have some very good comrades from my military service, and long may it continue.
