Who Do You Remember….?

"I remember you, you're the one who said .........head up, chin out, shoulders back, arms straight by your sides and feet at 45 degrees boyo, look up and look straight ahead!! Anyone remember Frank Ifields hit of the 60s other than me? Yes I know the words after the dots weren't part of the lyrics, I was just having a silly moment. I joined 3DG in Muenster on transfer from 10H. My first recollections were of Dave Gardiner who was my troop leader in C  Sqn, Wilbur Gaskin, was SSM I think, Bomber Brown, Scriv, AC Trevelyan, Brummy Whitehouse who I hadn't seen since JLR, Ginge Wright and Sid Swan, Oscar Houston (another meet up after JLR) the last three from the regimental hockey team I was in, I seem to recall Brian Orchard also as SSM C Sqn for a while. Later John Holden, Geordie Cairns, Big Jack and Chester Price on the provost. Jonny Hall was adjutant and Captain Scholfield was Nic Vivians 2IC , I met up with the former many years later in his native Zimbabwe whilst I was training  Mugabe's rag, tag and bobtail national army. Harry Dazeil Payne was CO, he interviewed me on his recce visit to York Barracks about my transfer. He asked me what sports I played, I said I was a regimental rugby and hockey player. He said  it was a pity I didn't play football!! He still took me though!! Happy days, yeah that's another song!!

Who Do You Remember….?

Real characters I can remember ; Ronny Maddocks who, when we'd won a Cavalry Cup match, took us all into C Sqn bar and spent all his weeks wages ( it had been payday!) buying beer for the team - his infamous wife, Moira, found out & gave him a black eye ! Captain(later Major) Harry Mantle, whose dealings in the transfer market ( poaching players from other units) would show Klopp, Mourino etc, just how to do it ! Scouse Allen, eating live birds & worms (ugg!) on exercise ( his brother the last man to be hanged in England), Joe DuDa, " Whyfor you kick my dog & call him f*** off ?", the C.O. in Detmold Lt Col Allen , inspecting our Cents wearing white gloves !, Sammy ( "Midnight" or  "Fingers") Jones( lost 'em lining up the 'dozer blade),and would order a round holding his hand up "2 pints & 2 halves"!!,  the Master Duff who joined us, provided fabulous food but was " moved on" for spending a years ration money  in just 6 months, and Clulow, who painted fabulous murals on the cookhouse walls ( helped, allegedly, by the wacky baccy !!). Detmold was my first posting abroad, and became a real eye opener for me, helped in no small way by knowing some real characters, some of whom I've mentioned here. John ( JKW)

Bob, yep Myra, you're so right, & Mahoney, he who was "shipped out" to Argentina to polish up his polo skills (he was good, apparently), but never made it as a credible officer IMO even after his return.  More names remembered ; Terry McMahon, Taffy Gibbs, Gordon Hatfield, John Tylee, Bernie Winters (LAD, who taught Scouse Allen a lesson !), Jack Potts, Butch Hampson, Tony Riley, & Jim (Mervyn) Hardy - I knew all these guys really well, with some great tales about most of 'em ! Bob R, the Florida sun must be getting in your eyes ! I mentioned the guy who painted the murals on the cookhouse wall in my 2nd post above - his name was Clulow (spelling ?), & it was widely believed he relied on the wacky baccy  for inspiration ! On his demob, I was told he painted a Sistine Chapel replica on the ceiling of a top London nightclub for £10,000 - a tremendous amount of money (& "baccy" !) in the 60's !! David, Len Cashmore, yep - wasn't he the one who, through a gross act, caused Davy Dale to re create the Sgts Mess Wooden Spoon ( Mess Pistol Shoot Award) because the original couldn't be drunk out of EVER again !?! More names from Detmold ; Sid Widdowson, Sam Podmore, Denis (Bunny) Thubron & his brother (RQMS) known as "Big Bunny", Graham (Scouse) Pierce & "Piggy" Pierce the Pig Slops guy in the QM's, Paul Savage, Joe Henderson, Mick Perry, Pete Chadwick, Pete Bloor,Tom Patterson, Brian Orchard, & Ben Woodall. Some names from the past there, anyone with stories about them ? Let's keep the memories "alive", even a snippet of info will help preserve their time as a Carabinier, so go for it ! John (JKW)

Bob, hope you aren't overdosing on Disney glitch out there Lol! I wasn't in Detmold, I have no idea when they  joined the Regiment. I was just remembering ad hoc old comrades who sprang to mind. As an aside, I vaguely remember your wife, pretty woman, no disrespect but  I never thought she looked like Fred Broadbent. ............................!!!
