Now;this is just some thoughts I have been having lately apropos who posts and what we write about. First off; it is a fact that JKW, Tom, Frankie, Bob Riley, Bob Lewis and myself are the mainstays of the discussion forums, supported by Freddie and one or two others from time to time. My apologies if I have missed someone off. I really enjoy posting and reading others' posts. Sometimes I realize myself that what I write about may well be boring to others or at odds with their opinions. That's part and parcel of the debating process and social media discussion forums. BUT; I do ask myself; given the very small number of members who contribute to the forums, how many people actually read the posts? How many people log in and take any notice? Are our posts considered drivel or do members, even the non participatory ones, enjoy reading what we post? I absolutely do realize that many people don't have the inclination to write about anything, some may not have the time, have other more important things that occupy their time et al. But, I have begun to ask myself is there any point in continuing to post? I have raised the issue of the lack of members' participation before and it did prompt a mini flourish of contributions for a good day or two but then it all went back to the status quo. I DO enjoy conversing with JKW, Tom, Frankie and the two Bobs  but we could do that in other ways if that was the limit of the interested audience.  So, before I curtail my posting frequency  (I know, I know, I already hear the cheers!)  I wondered if there is any way of knowing , outwith  the cohort of  usual suspect posters, if any, or many, other members are reading what we post? Good to hear others' views, especially those of the members who are not prolific posters.

David, Methinks that whilst we few may be the mainstays of this site, we do at times come up with some serious and enjoyable chat, which is the object of sites such as this. But I agree that we are a small number of the total website members, as can be seen in the vast number of registered on site ex members of the original 2 regiments and the present RSDG who do not subscribe to the site (for many reasons, no doubt), all perhaps looking, but not responding when they read the msgs, so I wonder if a reminder that we few do not own the site, we just happen to be people who enjoy the banter, and sometimes, the serious sides of life. As would others once they try. Also, not everyone has the needed laptops or other devices to join in this banter. Perhaps too much serious stuff and not enough lighter hearted stuff, so we may need to scratch heads, and think of other items to discuss. AND maybe once the Referendum is over we might get back to the fun side of it all. Just my thoughts.......

I agree Tom, I am just conscious of the fact "we few" are the only people posting and I am really curious as to how many  others are reading the posts? Is anyone else reading the posts?  Is the site becoming/has become a debating shop for us few? If others are enjoying the posts and topics but not wanting to actually post themselves or join in the debates or discussions that's fine let it all roll along as is because I do enjoy the chats, discussions and debates most of which are grown up or good fun and worth taking part in. Unlike many other social media discussion sites!  But I am just a bit concerned that some might feel we few have somehow quasi taken over the site and are therefore reluctant to take part in our discussions. I sincerely hope not!  Conversely it could be, as you say, our topics are too heavy, too political or whatever but without any response or interaction we will never know. Like I said I am beginning to consider curtailing my posting frequency until I get a better insight to what is really going on. Anyway; have a great evening, I'm sure we will talk again soon.

There is data available from Google Analytics which will reveal numbers visiting the site and the proportion of members to non members. It also shows the number of pages that have been looked at. I have requested the info and will publish it when I receive it.   Freddy

Hey ho heady bang just I'd lighten the mowed ( I know spelling) but what the hell ,I as you may relize like to a) keep in contact with old mates  b) visit both my old regimental sights other being the 14/20 KH ,which I must admit has a flourishing site ,but cos a large majority support the red team in Manchester I only add when something of interest is posted c) Facebook which has our Scotish ex's oh and Vic Bailey ....a few years back after Jim Smiths passing I made a vow to myself to keep Jim's idea of a Carbs site alive ,whatever the drivel or mundane ...yes Dave ( David) there is a small crew of posters and we aren't Shakespeare ,I must edit more often before pusting and chuck spulling too ,but when we get together in Chester in November we carry on as if  we're Detmold,Herford,Munster yesterday not 40/50 years ago when computers were something in a sci-fi movie .Would believe Wee Frankie and I tried the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards site when it was up ,David if you think this site is short on interesting comments or posts ,the Scots DG ( not such a mouthful) is a feckin cemetery ,they use Facebook or the local pub ,were we are spread all over the countries ,so we need Freddie to keep us communicating .....now like on EU package " if I've offended anyone by my comments " I'll get the first one in at The Combined Services Club in November , have a great summer and England to win a championship at last

Bob, I am really aware of how dormant (dead) the SCOTS DG site is I visited it yesterday, it is pathetic, out of date, boring and unused. My point about our site is entirely different. It isn't about the subject matter being discussed, it isn't about peoples' grammar, spelling or whatever, quite the contrary, if people thought the site played host to grammar police they would be even less likely to post.I want to see many more people posting, regardless of their writing skills or the subject they wish to write about. My point(s) concern the paucity of people posting and the desire to understand how many people are visiting the site and reading what "the few" are posting, whether anyone other than us is at all interested in what we post et al. In essence I don't want this site to slowly ebb into becoming another SCOTS DG site. Imagine if 3 or 4 of the 6/7 stalwart posters stopped posting, the site would become moribund and slip into oblivion. We owe it to Freddy and our sense of comradeship not to let that happen but I confess I am becoming less inclined to want to post so often if no one else is interested in what we are discussing or want to join in. I'm not becoming morose or anything I'm just trying to work out how to get more people involved in a brilliant site that seemingly everyone wants to keep but only a few are fully supporting. To better understand that we need to see the figures Freddy is kindly gathering. Have a great evening.

I believe that many more than "the few" do actually look in to read our posts. Remember, since Freddy took over, you don't need to log on to read, only to contribute, so many so-called "lurkers" can enjoy the banter whilst remaining incognito - their choice, of course, & I for one am happy for "the few" to continue posting. On the old site, I once received an email from one such "lurker" who felt a certain "poster" was hogging the Forum- "Am I being bitchy?" he asked. When I explained that he WAS being bitchy, especially considering he'd  never, ever posted anything on the site himself, he cut off all contact with me, & I WASN'T the poster he was referring to !! Such guys are in the minority I reckon, & although greater participation would be welcomed, I'd much prefer the status quo to prevail than suffer the utter cr*p Farcebook & Twotter serves up in abundance. To tell the truth both David and John are right in their own way ,we old folk have a problem with using this and other means of communicating to our friends and family . There's a lot of people out there who only own a Nokia basic phone and do not have a lap top or iPad ,there's actually 2 in my family one older and one younger than me . The other problem is age ,as we've seen in the last months how many of our comrades have been called to their last parade ,plus I found out recently of a mate who has Parkinson and Altzeimers which is taken his ability to communicate with family let alone us on the site ,this getting old isn't all it's cracked up to be . Yes there will be guys who will attend north west functions but won't post on the site thro choice , as it is you've got me blathering on about this and that which is current or memories of days gone by , but whatever there's a book out by an US general title being " once we were soldiers " say no more !!

I frequent the JLR RAC site along with JKW and it is in a similar position there are a few diehards that are battling away to keep it going.  The official SCOTS DG Association site has actually closed their Forum despite the vain efforts of Dave, JKW, myself and one or two others who tried to muster interest it died a death. Mind you it wasn't the best managed forum in fact I don't think it was managed at all.  As Bob mentioned I frequent the SCOTS DG FB pages, not out of initial choice because I much prefer this type of forum but if I don't keep up with FB then I lose touch all together so I have accepted that I have to bit the FB bullet whilst remembering (not always successfully) that also means biting my own tongue on occasion and JKW knows full well I am not very good at that :).  As to this forum I don't mind that it is only a few of us who post and it would be a great pity and a loss Dave if you choose to stop posting.  As to how many actually do 'read only' it would be interesting to know on the one hand but it might also make us more wary about the 'elephants in the room' so to speak. This is a great wee site and I am happy to make my small contribution to support those who went to the trouble to resurrect it when it was almost lost after Smudger's passing. Horses for courses and this wee horse likes this wee course.
