John Scrivener.
January 3, 2019
‘Scriv’ very sadly passed away today. Most will know John had suffered a major stroke some time ago but had battled the after effects with courage and tenacity. John was a friend and mentor to me for many years and Liz was a wonderful friend to both of us also. I was Scriv’s SSM in Sennelager before becoming his Sqn 2IC. We had some great times together both on and off duty. Lizzie and Veronika rode together and we had some great times at the various horse shows and other Regimental events. For a guy as fit and active as John was, his stroke must have been a terrible shock but, supported by the strength and love of Liz, he did his best to carry on with life as best he could. I am greatly saddened at John’s death, I have exchanged messages with Liz this morning who, even at this terribly sad time, remembers the fun times we all had together. RIP John you will be missed old chum.

So sad to hear of my old Sqn Ldr's passing ; a really nice guy was Major John Scrivener, small in stature but big in heart - I was his SQMS in Sennelager for quite some time, & we got on famously. He was initially selected as the "Boss" of the Close Observation Troop (C.O.T) for the Belfast tour and opted for me to be his WO2 2 i/c - whilst I was away on my sneaky beaky course for this new job, the "powers that be" decided a Major was too high a rank for the role & replaced him with a Captain (albeit a very good one). I know "Scriv" was bitterly disappointed with this decision but in typical fashion took it on the chin & soldiered on. He will be sadly missed by many - RIP "Boss". John (JKW)
