Just heard the sad news of Stephen Stopford's death. He commanded SCOTS DG in the early days of Osnabrueck and he was a first class CO and a thoroughly, genuinely nice man. RIP.

I first knew of Maj General Stopford as my 1st Sqn Leader after Amalgamation - he was OC "D" Sqn during our stints in Edinburgh, NI & Cyprus. A really great "boss" to have, quietly efficient, approachable and ,as David said, genuine & sincere. Unlike one or two of either previous Regiment, he showed no bias whatsoever towards guys who served prior to Amalgamation.  As CO I never served with him at RD, being ERE at the time, but can easily believe he brought all the same qualities to that position as he did as Major i/c of  "D"  (Independent Airportable) Sqn - I was proud to have served under his command. Rest In Peace Sir, your duty is well & truly done. John (JKW)

I echo all that the last two gents have, I was in RHQ troop with him what a quiet unassuming man who had that rare quality of being able to put any man who served with him at ease. A true gentleman no airs and graces. R.I.P  sir.
