Bad Habits !

September 7, 2017

I'm not sure what driving instructors teach nowadays, but I've noticed some terribly bad habits on the roads on almost a daily basis ; one is to fly down at full pelt to a junction & then hammer on the brakes, stopping bang on the line, or worse, sometimes jutting over it - all it takes is a patch of oil or diesel, even a wet or icy patch, and bang, another avoidable accident. Another bad habit is to brake, manoeuvre and THEN indicate, sometimes having crossed 3 lanes before indicating to the right - what's the point, they're already in the lane with no other option but to turn right, & why brake first anyway !?! And don't start me on the use of indicators at roundabouts, especially those who indicate TWO exits before they plan to leave the roundabout, or Volvo drivers who only have indicators fitted as an optional accessory, most choosing not to have them fitted (it seems) ! Any other "Bad Habits" get up your nose ?

Indecision joining a roundabout. Break in the traffic, nothing coming but still no one enters the roundabout or if they do they go at a hesitant snail pace. If it's clear get the chuck into the roundabout and let those behind you go about their business. People who take an age to move once a traffic light turns green! You are 6/7 th in a queue at a light that changes quickly. 3 cars get through because by the time the lead car has decided the light has changed, has engaged brain followed by first gear and crawled away the light is getting ready to change again. People who hog the centre lane on motorways despite the new law. Lorries who pull out immediately ahead of you and then take 3 or more miles to inch past the lorry they are overtaking because they are only able to travel at 1/2 mph faster than the vehicle they are trying to pass. Finally my biggest bugbear. Lorries that lose small parts of their load when carrying stones, grit etc. I have had 3, yes 3, cracked windscreens on 3 separate cars from that!!!

The one I hate is the driver who overtakes you then pulls in front taking your braking distance which forces you to brake to regain braking distance, closely followed by the one who screams past you when you are doing 70 the pulls across three lanes braking all the way to take the exit. Morons the lot of them,

Bad habits ,mmmmmm,I remember an old troop sergeant telling us young troopers ours was " breathing " ok joking aside. We (Ireland) have older drivers who have NEVER taken a DRIVING TEST let alone a lesson, roundabouts especially the very small ones tortoise speed then break then indicate after turning. Older drivers max speed 20 ,yes 20 feckin miles an hour , you know they are going to do something by break lights oh as a second thought indicates. As for motorways ,except for Dublin M50 all are 2 lanes ,so you have tractors and trailers or the guy/ gal who think they own the overtaking lane at 50 mph or as Bob said they overtake then pull straight into your breaking distance, then there is the " baseball hat " who only knows warp speed and full headlights . As for driving at night " main beam " till 50 feet from your bonnet, and my favourite " mobile feckin phones" , could spend a week telling stories but we've all had/seen idiots with a) phone stuck to head ,b) texting, c) taking photos. Need I say more
