John, You have my deep sympathy for your present computer state, as you say "OK when working, but useless when not" is sometimes a problem we all have. Having worked on huge IBM computers I could walk around inside some of the printers when servicing the brutes!  And diagnostics told what to do and in which order. It is a pity the makers do not let us know how to fix laptop b***** things without all the jargon they use! And I am dismayed at the collapse of LFC this afternoon, they all lost the plot at the same time..... It is as though they beat the top teams, yet cannot handle the lower down teams as easily. It was so bad I have knocked a big hole in my latest Islay malt!!!!! Boo Hoo. I hope it all comes right ASAP.   Tom.  Hic!

The worst is when router or other internet provider issues crop up. Now I confess to being computer dyslexic when it comes to anything technical, BUT I can follow instructions if some expert talks me through what to do. Trouble is I can never understand what these people say, the accents are so heavy I simply cannot follow what they tell me to do. I have had some stand up rows with Sebastian from Mumbai, or Elizabeth from  Bangalore when that happens. Last time I simply refused to speak to the person offering me tech help and eventually ended up with a charming guy from Cork, I think, Eire anyway. I now almost exclusively use my I Pad for my daily PC needs. We bought an expensive touchscreen, tower free, desk top PC a couple of months ago and I hardly use it now. Santa tells me I 'm getting a new, even better I Pad for Christmas so we probably wasted a lot of dosh on the desk top one. As an aside I am on Talk Talk,  haven't fired up my desk top PC for some time, guess I will have to see if mine is affected as JKW's  is!

Internet ,wifi,iPads, laptops ?? Yes my grandchildren are Einstein to my dumkoff ,here in rural Ireland we have to wait till 2020's before we get fibre broadband by our telephone line ,remembering we had it in Rochdale in the late 80's . So I'm communicating with the world via "satilite dish" stuck on my house like a Sky dish ,and it's expensive too €40 a month ,then telephone bills of €35/40 a month ,but if you want to communicate with friends and family it'll cost ,my bug bare is that my daughter has the same plus tv and mobile phones (2) for less in the Rochdale ,and there is no limit to downloads or speeds etc ,me I get a slow service and a limit on downloads ok for us but when family are here all you get is moaning teenagers ,it's slow granddad . So equipment ,2 laptops,2 iPads and 2 mobile phones ,one of the laptops is our main machine connected to printer and has a TB ( what ever that is ) of memory so the sales man says  it will store files etc for the next century ( as if ) and as David I'm lost . We have 2 e-mail address on the iPads and laptops oh and phones but the main one is the wife's e-mail letting her get the junk mail . The one thing I'm pleased at is having an Amazon account ,both iPads were from them and most my e-books,e- cigs, sandals even bought a woodburner from them a lot cheaper than local stores here in Ireland let alone the UK . So John have a look on Amazon for a replacement , you'll be surprised as I was on the price difference for kit and in most cases delivery is fast and costs nowt .The downloading of files  we went to a local Internet cafe and they managed to recover all our stuff of 15 years onto a disc ,that allowed us to download to our new main laptop ,and we still had the disc , I found they were not too expensive ,good luck !!!

Bob, That "TB" is not an illness, it is the mystic code in IT for a terrabyte, which in laymans terms is an awful lot of memory, enough for a century of reading it all, and still be no nearer to imagining that vast number of data in print. I hope this helps........   Tom

Thanks Bob R, my "expert" is back & has said he'll come tonight and take a look - if anyone can sort it, he can, hopefully without resorting to Amazon for another PC. I do use Amazon a lot, in fact before buying anything more expensive than a bog roll I check out their prices first !! Wish me luck, John(JKW)

Luck John ,one my expert said think about a cloud but I'd get airsickness ,serious though I use a cloud for my kindles books ,there is a problem that you could get hacked . The other option is a separate data stick or hard drive depends on how much data you have to save ??????

The only time I want a cloud is when I pop my clogs, so I can sit on it and watch the antics on Earth far below!!!!!

Back on line again !! After the meltdown of my PC, my friendly expert near neighbour, after 2 days of graft, has got me up 'n' running again. At the same time I've ditched TalkTalk as my ISP, & taken up with PlusNet - I didn't know call centres could speak English, but those of PlusNet do, what a refreshing change !! Since Friday I've been VERY busy alerting all I come into contact with online, including banks & loads of other business' & companies (didn't realise I was "in" with so many !), of my new email address, so until that is complete & passwords etc, updated (& I'm nearly there), you'll maybe understand my wee AWOL period - I'll be back early next week, helping you all to put the world to rights ! You jinxed me JK, my TalkTalk router is now playing up. 36 minutes talking to Ishraque culminated in the decision to send me an engineer, Thursday. Apparently the plethora of tests needed were to ensure the engineer was necessary otherwise it would have cost me £65, I told him that would have just been deducted from my cancelled subscription to TalkTalk as I would go elsewhere for my ISP. Despite holding a perfectly good conversation on my landline it took 9 minutes to confirm it was ok. I had already rebooted the router, reset it twice, changed the filter all to no avail, it's more off than on. I explained all of this to Mr I, did it stop him asking me if I had done this 5 minutes later? Of course not. Had I cut or damaged the wires, had I continually switched the router on and off over the past week, was the wire from the socket to the router very long..........it's 12 inches, is the plug dickie, have I had a poo lately... you get the drift. Awaiting the engineer with anticipation.
