A few years ago we were talking about Afghanistan and the pointlessness of it all. The crux of the conversation, as the talk of  British Forces' withdrawal  progressed, was the concensus opinion of those in the discussion that things would quickly return to the status quo thereafter. I recall saying at the time it would all prove to be a useless and tragic loss of life and the Taliban were just waiting for us to leave before regaining control. We lost over 450 men and women in that war, over 2000 were WIA, many more were hospitalised and  many suffered devastating, life changing injuries. Today's news that the Taliban are now fully back in control took no one by surprise other than perhaps the expectation that it could easily have happened sooner. I can only begin to imagine the sadness and distress of the relatives of those brave men and women who gave their lives for this pointless, unwinnable war, I can only imagine the bitterness and anger of those heroic men and women whose lives were changed forever by their injuries at this news. The election IS important and this news today was almost a minor side issue but that is the whole point of this post. As a nation we love heroes, we mostly love our servicemen and women (Corbyn, Abbot et al notwithstanding). But; how fickle we are, how quickly we forget, out of sight out of mind, the thousands of  former soldiers still struggling to rebuild their lives, the thousands of relatives still grieving their loss, all now yesterday's people telling yesterday's news!! The military covenant is all but defunct, the military itself is still being run down and is, by all accounts, demoralised and undermanned. The sad truth is no political party has kept its promises to our armed forces, none of them have honoured their pledges to our servicemen and women. No one even made the slightest fuss about today's news, no one was interviewed, no one from the military spoke of the waste of life, no one cared! And THAT is a travesty in my opinion.

Politicians just move on to the next cock up . Living as I do in Ireland and having the head guy from the IRA Gerry Adams still spouting his blather about a United Ireland no matter the cost . Wanting soldiers charged with murder for doing their job ,but when families of the disappeared wanting the loved ones bodies returned or IRA killers brought to justice. Consider over 3000 people lost their lives to this organisation, most of them civilians ,innocent just wrong place at the wrong time . Now the leader of the Labour Party is a known supporter of terrorists. All his energy is put into Marks doctorin ,forget the soldiers who kept him and his followers safe in bed or the innocent murdered by his friends going about their every day life. Comerade .
