How The MightyHave Fallen

November 20, 2016

JKW's recent post about the derring do exploits of the SAS against ISIS makes heartwarming reading. The latest military statistics however puts the whole farce of our defence forces into perspective. We currently have just over 80,000 service people in the army. The smallest standing army for over 200 years. The infantry numbers just over 19,000, roughly the same total of those killed in a single day in a WW1 battle. The big plan to substantially increase the TA has fallen dramatically short. To counteract criticism of the low TA recruitment figures and the resultant dearth of "battle ready" Territorials the MOD has seemingly halved the training requirements of these soldiers before they are considered deployment ready. Just what the Regular Army needs behind them in combat, a load of half trained reservists! Many of them were bad enough when they were supposedly fully trained! Let's not perpetuate the fallacy that we, as a nation, actually fulfil our pledge to spend 2per cent of GDP on defence within the NATO context. These figures are "massaged" with all sorts of other overseas spending included in the overall total. We DO spend more than most other European NATO member states but the whole NATO defence thing is a farce. The weak state of NATO is the catalyst for Putin's ever increasing  Balkan States' encroachments as well as his ever bolder involvement in Syria. Now, as the President Elect of the USA  is less than 2 months away from beginning to enact some of his planned policies, the impact of the US dramatically curtailing its input to NATO both financially and militarily will really begin to hit home. It is surely now time for the rest of us to draw breath and reappraise our defence needs. The proposed EU Force has allegedly now been shelved, probably as a direct result of the outcome of the US election result, the time is therefore, now surely right for a rethink about rebuilding our decimated ground forces. Imagine for a second the U.K. actually splits and  one or more of our constituent countries achieves independence Not such an unimaginable happening given recent High Court judgements et al. Then imagine  if all of the Scots, Welsh and Irish Regiments  and servicemen and women were "relocated" to their own independent countries. Highly improbable I grant you, so imagine if only the Scots did so, as Krankie has threatened once they achieve independence! We would be left with a standing army smaller than Belgium! Unlikely, I hear you say and probably so, but impossible? I think not! The world is unlikely to become a more peaceful place in the near future I believe the current poor state of our defence forces is shortsighted and potentially dangerous. It also means we are taken far less seriously by the US and other global powers like China, Russia et al. Just a Sunday rant, X Factot  is on and it's such a load of trash but she who must be obeyed likes it and it's a quid pro quo for me watching the boxing last evening!

David, You're obviously not privy ,as I've  been, to see the Chancellors Autumn Statement in advance of Wednesday's announcement ! In it he declares that Defence spending will be increased to 4% of GDP, HS2 is cancelled with the planned funds going direct to the NHS & research institutions, fuel tax will be reduced , the State pension triple lock will continue, income tax threshold to be raised, Overseas Aid drastically reduced to help fund these changes, our Armed Forces will be withdrawn from both Iraq & Afghanistan to let them sort themselves out, and Wee Nicola Krankie Sturgeon will be sent to the Tower for treason. Some might not believe one or two items I've let slip, but those pigs flying overhead assure me  I'm correct !! John (JKW) PS Agree with your assessment of the threat we face from Putin's gang, he really is flexing his muscle at the moment, testing the water whilst doing so.

So the Navy that ruled the worlds oceans ,gave Britin its security to have an empire that covered a quarter of the earth ,destroyed all that came against it on the high seas ,fed the nation thro 2 world wars !! Now they have 19 frigates/destroyers ,2 super carriers ( with no aircraft till 2020??) I can only say that my Dad who did his duty during WW2 serving in all the major oceans/ seas must be turning in his grave . For fecks sake this is an island ,can someone tell those politicians who run the MOD ,once Brexit happens we have to protect our fishing industry as well our merchant fleet .I suppose I should have realised now that our old regiment has only 300 or so serving soldiers down from the 600 odd from our day ,that the other services would have treated the same ,shite.
