Italian Rugby Tactics

What a furore over a team that England traditionally trounces adopting a tactic wholly within Union rules, to upset and thwart the mighty England. Fair play? The rules are there for both teams to abide by, underdogs with no chance of holding their own normally find a legal tactic that gives them a better chance. Seems reasonable and fair to me. Can't believe England couldn't adapt to it. For anyone not au fait with the actual issue, traditionally once two players are on the ground grappling for a ball, both teams form a loose scrum known as a ruck. The aim is for the player holding the ball to then feed it back through his own ruck and commence an attacking move via the forwards and three quarters lined abreast at the flanks of the ruck. Both sides have to stay on their own side of the pitch i.e. Behind their own player when that happens or are offside.  The 'Eyetalians' devised a cunning scheme. They wouldn't form a ruck at all, they would just let England do that and gain control of the ball, BUT by not forming a ruck the Italians couldn't be off side so they could position themselves BETWEEN the English forwards waiting for the ball to start their attack. This is just not rugby as we know it and is highly disruptive. England were so unable to cope with it they cried foul to the Referee and were told to get on with it. So, desperately unsettled they went into the tunnel at half time 5 points adrift!! They eventually won reasonably comfortably but the post match outcry is pathetic. There is now a whole new debate underway about changing the rules to stop it happening again. I love the English RU team, they have gone 17 matches undefeated but this silly business is just unbecoming of them in my opinion.

I know even less about rugby than your knowledge of football David, but did see / hear the palaver  about the England v Italy match - you're right, if it's in the rules & therefore legal, then guys with the experience the England team obviously have should have been able to circumvent the problems the tactic caused. At least we did win in the end !! Incidentally, where's Tom Coates these days, not gone to Goa looking for Bob R has he ?! John (JKW)

If Tom has gone to Goa to look for Bob Riley he will be disappointed John because I think Bob is back home. That aside I also noticed the absence of Tom on theses pages lately. Let's hope he is ok and just having a bit of a break.

In Tipperary guys have been for a week . As the rugby pundits were saying on Irish tv ,that it was the only way the ities had to play England by bending the rules . They also look forward to trouncing England at the Aviva to be champs for this year ,as an old drill sergeant said to me " in your dreams laddie "
