It’s SUGARS fault …..

Agreed Bob, too many parents opt for the easy life by turning a blind eye to what their off springs are getting up to, "anything for a bit of peace" syndrome. With regards the sugar tax, it would be far cheaper & far more useful if parents learned to say "NO" to the constant requests for sweets, chocolate and sugary drinks. As for getting exercise, I'm often dismayed as I travel about to see big patches of grass with no one playing on it - as a lad, every blade of grass around our way had us playing football until it was so dark we couldn't see the ball - even then we found a lamp post to play under to display our "skills"! The current generation better wise up, because the way the emphasis today seems to be build, build, build houses that few can afford, on every spare piece of land, including gardens, there'll be nowhere to play footy much longer ! Incidentally, passed a new housing development yesterday en route through Staffordshire / Cheshire, inviting people to buy a house there, "Starting at £450,000" ! John (JKW)

I ride my bicycle most days, weather permitting, I have a 12 mile route that takes  me about 45-50 minutes, along country lanes, a 4 mile purpose built cycle path alongside the River Ancholme and through a couple of small villages. Along the river I see quite a lot of walkers and cyclists, especially at the weekends. Almost all of them are older people!! I rarely see any youngsters. We have an abundance of green fields and sports pitches where we live most stay unused. We have lots of woods full of deer and other wildlife all with public footpaths. Apart from the odd younger dog walkers, once again we mostly encounter older people. Sad, it's as you say, a sign of the times and it is likely to get worse as yet more technology overtakes us. I remember as a kid, packing jam sandwiches and a bottle of water in a rucksack and going exploring in the countryside for hours and hours. We made bows and arrows, spears and fishing rods, collected tadpoles, went scrumping and had a whale of a time. My mother didnt really allow us to doss around the house all day when not at school. It was do your house jobs and then get out and amuse yourself. There just doesn't seem to be the parental control or stimulation of kids to exercise and have fun anymore or perhaps I am just getting to be an even grumpier old man. Mind you tell today's kids what we did for fun when we were young and they are likely to laugh at us.

Did it again ,no more funny icons. Now where was I ,oh sugar ,yes as a kid growing up in rationing till I was 8 sugar was gold dust ,then if you don't have it you don't crave it . But an old saying " if you don't use IT you'll lose IT " so as David says keeping busy active ,keeps the ticker going and other parts from failure. EXERCISE and a balanced diet ( not too much booze) with a bit of luck will result in a long life ,but who said living was easy ,you get what you put in .

Reading the Mail it seems our celebrity chefs are poisoning us with their wacky formula of meals, can I ask what happened to our old English menus of "bangers &smash" or even " fish & chips" ???? Does it always have to be designer meals, not enough to feed a mouse ,with a sauce on the side of the plate looking like a Picasso painting. Yes eat "red meat " once a week and balance your intake accordingly, when we are in Goa we try some of their veggie meals it's surprising what you can do with cottage cheese, not eating chicken curries every night ( as you can at £2 a pop) . I'm not saying that some of menus on Breakfast or other cooking programmes are not good ,yes we can try our own variations of the wholesome food of the United Kingdom to our pallet.

Today they want to ban soft ( sugary) drinks from the NHS hospitals, they keep blaming "sugar" when lack of "exercise " is the main problem as I see it. Stop having a easy life Mum/dad and giving your offsprings an iPad or the like ,get 'em doing physical out door sports ,and lead by example.
