The news coming out of the UK is the law changes for "the use of mobile phones while driving " ,they had examples of the results of people using their phones and causing death . Points and a fine also if your a " new driver " losing their licenses!! My question is "is this penalty enough"????? Why well we've all driven on foreign roads during our time on this planet, and some countries like Australia or Norway have what some mamby pamby advocates call draconian laws . Australia " zero" tolerance for drink driving, and it has produced results on the roads ,keeping the roads safer. Norway have a law in the case of you knocking down a child upto the age of 12 and that is if the child dies it's " automatic manslaughter or attempted manslaughter ,with heavy prison sentences. Now why with the advent of cars now that have " phone car connection " like my new Hyundai, select to answer or call via your steering wheels controller (as if you'd change the radio station) even if it's the wife on the phone . Now the problems I can see are that there are so many drivers out there that a) no license b) no insurance c) no tax d) stolen car e) don't give a feck about anyone else on the road f) drugs/drinkers . Now how do we deter the above from getting behind the wheel , the drink drive laws are not punitive enough as far I'm concerned ( example back 2010 footy World Cup a young driver through drinking caused the death of 7 of his friends and a farmer on his way home , 8 deaths 3 cars involved, punishment 5 years with 18 months suspended) another example of this time a truck driver on his phone causing the death of a young family on a UK motor way by plowing into the car . I know you guys have examples similar on you patch ,so do the Government make these types of behaviour not acceptable by imposing very large jail sentences on the perpetrators of said stupidity. As more and more cars are on the roads ,and more cars are more powerful compared to the speed limit on most of the roads/motorways, just imposing a slap on the wrist of fines and points doesn't do it for me , yep I practice what I preach ,no drinking and driving and the phone is off when driving only to be used once parked ,with Ireland having still to display tax, insurance and mot on the windscreen no feckin Guarda is going to get me or mine on that . Over to you ?????

In my opinion, there should be zero tolerance to ANY alcohol consumption and driving, the limit should be zero. Automatic minimum 3 year ban and 3 months salary in fines. In many European countries fines are set as number of months salary so that the fine affects everyone the same. You earn £1000pm the fine is £3k, earn £3000 pm you pay £9k. Mobile phones and driving are equally as bad. The new penalties don't go far enough. Too many people are flouting them and killing people. Should be at least half that of the drink driving I propose.
