Just watched the news and the chaos a bit of snow is causing throughout the South of England and beyond. Thousands of homes without electricity, people stranded for 3-7 hours on major roads by 5cm of snow. Cars in ditches everywhere. Wtf goes on in this country of ours, A couple of years ago en route to Muenster to visit V’s mum there had been non stop snow falling in Holkand and Germany throughout the whole of our 12 hour ferry journey. We had reservations about what we would face I must admit but, despite heavy snow settling on the autobahns, there was at least one drivable lane all th3 way from Rotterdam to Muenster. We saw not a single accident or car in a ditch, we met numerous snow ploughs and gritting lorries and thousands of drivers who knew how to drive in snow. Yes I was in a 4x4 SUV and yes I had snow tyres on but we simply never learn here. Every time we have a bit of snow chaos follows for a number of reasons. Bad driving and poor snow clearing/gritting are the two main culprits. We have never invested enough in winter precautions in this country offering the old favourite excuse bad snow conditions are a rarity and not worth spending a lot of money on. So listen to the glib excuse of the electricity guy explaining why thousands lost any power. Some snow settled on the conductors and the wind froze it. Er, why aren’t they insulated then ?? I know, not worth the cost because it doesn’t happen often enough. In our small town of some 4500 residents only the main roads get gritted, one of the most used B roads in the town that is access/egress to one of the major urban conurbations locally is on a hill that is laughably difficult to drive on when icy. And for that I pay £2200 pa council tax with an expected 6% rise expected this year. Grrrr!!

David you'll never change the way the British look after their roads . At the moment I'm in Kelkheim south of Frankfurt and normally this time of year they're into snow big time . Yes they have to fit " snow tyres " from October or their car insurance is invalid, yes even in this small town most of the streets/ roads are gritted or ploughed ,like last year .( this year is monsoon time ) Yes they use their cars big time but come on what would happen if in the United Kingdom everything went according to plan ,we have to complain about something especially the weather . Just think of the conversation in the pub of a nighttime without the weather, all the talk would be about Brexit,Corbyn or better still Liverpool winning again ,just give the inefficiency of the councilman a wide birth or the poor driving skills of our young drivers in snow . Later we are flying into Manchester so I hope by then all this white stuff has disappeared and we can celebrate New Year .

Driving back to Chester after spending the Xmas at my son's home in Durham on Boxing day, left Durham in bright but cold weather , all the way to Teebay, M6, where the gods dropped the temp to 1 degree or so, with low dark clouds, then we got to M1, where it turned dark and freezing conditions, and got even worse until we got to the high ground just north of Manchester, where the weather was really bad, with snow squalls, high winds and freezing temperatures. The commercial goods drivers reacted well to the short visibility by slowing down and driving with good distances between other HGVs, but civvy drivers were going almost blind into freezing heavy mist and snow. This went on until we reached south Manchester, where the vision improved. I can not understand why the loons who drive so fast in such conditions are allowed on the roads. But that is their stupid behaviour coming out. The police were for ever signalling that these loons should slow down and leave a safe distance between themselves and all other drivers, and I would hate to have been hit by a slipping/sliding loon travelling too close and too fast, but they seem to have an "in the background" belief that THEY are safe, all the others are to blame.... Typical lunacy!!
