Is it just me getting fed up with the constant appeals (usually by celebs) asking for money ("Only £5 a month") to help kids abroad get food & water ?   I'm not talking about those getting bombed to bits in Syria, I'm meaning those kids in African nations, usually wearing Man Utd footy tops or designer T shirts, many of whom don't look under nourished to me.  Yes, I know there ARE countless kids who are deprived of life's necessities in these countries, but surely any money donated should go towards preventing pregnancy in the first place ( the pill, condoms, education, castration etc) - if such a programme did take place, it's success would then mean there would be sufficient food & water to go around, and I might then donate to the cause !

John I completely agree with you ,why ???,well a long time ago in the early 70's I was stationed in Netheravon we as a family decided to help out with kids education in Keyna ( supposedly for girls) so for nearly 20 years we donated £5 then update to £7 ( talking 70's now) a month . Then after I became a civvie I holidayed in Mombasa, allowing me to travel to Nairobi to an old friend, once there Ted (my mate) took me to the Action Aid school in the burbs ,thinking I would be able to see the girl who'd sent me our last Xmas card . To cut a long story short there were about 35 boys and only 2 girls attending, asking the staff I found that the girl had left the school years before ............so you can guess my reaction on returning to the UK,the only donation we did before coming to Ireland was the North West helicopter ambulance, then when retirement I did voluntary work giving my time to causes in our local community, still do here in the NCBI shop in our nearest town .....John you'll also notice that these adverts for (so called ) dying children happens when your just about to sit down for your T or the early news .....for that we have the hold button on Sky ....your spot on about birth control question would we have had kids we couldn't afford let alone FEED !!!!!!!!!

The quick way to resolve the lack of healthy drinking water in Africa is for all these appeals for money to give the population fresh, clean safe water is for the civilised world to stop all these appeals for £3, £5 or whatever, close down the people in the civilised western world begging for the cash, because you can bet your bottom dollar that the head of the appealing UK company is being paid thousands of pounds , while the waterless African countries are not getting a couple of pence a day...Close the begging charities, and send out qualified people from the west to actually DO the well digging/building, and sod the charity appeallers in UK, THEY are parasitic morons, "feathering their own nests, thank you" while the innocents in Africa are being used by westerners to get a lot of lolly, thank you!!!

Point taken Bob, perhaps we should all press the "powers that be" to ensure that  clean water, suitable for drinking anywhere, not just  in Europe, could be the catalyst for ALL countries to be forced to do the same water purification, as we do, no argument...(But I always thought that the Liffey was the source for Guinness production, or am I misinformed?) If it is safe, perhaps a pipeline should be put in place to take some of the safe Guinness water down to the remote areas you describe?  It is a crime in this day and age that water in your part of the world should not be safe? I have a rusty old shovel if they need it??  They should not have to buy clean bottled water when it could be provided by the water company, at cost, plus a bit, as most of us do in Europe?

just in from a small job, listened to radio four afternoon play, this finished then there was an appeal about how young girls are missing out, each month they say they cannot go to school for one week when they are menstruating,(on their bad week). If we in the western countries would donate £35  per girl they would be able to purchase washable sanitary towels, and thus not miss out on their education. hey ho  I,ll get me coat , and go and have my dinner. They also ask you to donate your clothes to the starving Africans, they cannot be starving if my clothes fit them.
