Many years ago, (too many) my wife gave birth to a son and a daughter (on separate occasions). She received no national media coverage for doing so, no accolades, no hysteria, no one other than her own family were even remotely interested. Why should they be? Hundreds of millions of other women have done the same. It's just part of life, nature's way of preserving the human race. two people have sex, the woman gets pregnant and a child is often born.

Now don't get me wrong!!! I am a committed Royalist, I am loyal to the crown and always will be. No leftie republicanism for this guy!! BUT; am I alone in being fed up with all the hype about the new addition to the Royal family? Do so many people REALLY care that much?? Sure, I am happy for them and glad all is well but I would be for any family in similar circumstances. All over the world babies are born into quite horrendous situations, hundreds of thousands die of malnutrition before they attain their first birthday, no great fuss is made about them. Their mothers often give birth in dreadful conditions with many dying as a result. Now, the parents of the new Royal baby can't help that, nor can they help the media attention their new offspring generates. But it is a sad sign of the times that the birth of a new Royal baby attracts almost as much attention as the loss of thousands of lives and the utter deprivation facing tens of thousands more in Nepal. I keep seeing the pictures of babies and little children pulled from the rubble or sitting in filthy puddles, thousands without even the most basic shelter from the nightmare elements.

I understand we are sending 3 chinooks to help them!! What a wonderfully generous contribution to a country that supplies some of our most loyal and brave fighting men. What a wonderful gesture when we send shed loads of money to Pakistan, India, Afghanistan and many other countries that not only despise us but are so corrupt the money never reaches the poor it was intended for anyway.

So; I congratulate the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on their new arrival, I wish the whole family well. BUT; I don;'t want to hear much more about it. I DO want to read, watch and hear that we are helping the Nepalese in their hour of need!!

The Royal birth is a bit of GOOD news for a change, and yes, the terrible events in Nepal are maybe more important, but that shouldn't detract from the chance of seeing / hearing about something other than the General Election and tragic events in the wider world. With regards our assistance to Nepal, many millions of pounds have been given , two lots of £5million from HM Government plus the generous donations from the UK public, as well as the 3 Chinooks - if every country was as generous , including the one's we actively "support", then the recovery of Nepal might speed up. We need a "feel-good" factor occasionally, to brighten up our lives - the Royal birth has given me that . John (JKW)

To tell the truth, the ONLY bit of good news I want to hear/read about is that HM the Queen has declared Salmond and Sturgeon as enemies of the State, and banished them both permanently to the Unholy Terror state of North Korea, where they will be more at home, but silent as church mice. For Ever. Neither of them would survive for one second if they threatened  "Kill im son" the way they have threatened to destroy the UK and all it stands for.

And I echo the sentiments so far expressed here for the people and country of Nepal. They deserve to be looked after immediately by UK , sending as much as the Nepalese ask for immediately, and stop sending ANY cash EVER AGAIN to their surrounding countries which hate and despise us in UK.  The world has gone crazy. We should help our friends, and ignore our enemies, not the other way round. I am eternally grateful to have the Nepalese and their brave soldiers as our friends.

I just believe in their hour of need we should step up to the mark. The £10 million JK speaks of  is a drop in the ocean compared to the 0.7% of our total annual GDP we spend on overseas aid, a great deal of which is given to countries who spend their own money on nuclear weapons but have no state social structure in place whose people starve and die from lack of health care, food and water. Other recipients of our money just despise us or hate us, Afghanistan and Pakistan as examples, India, one of whose state ministers recently said we were mugs to send them money that they didn't need or ask for. My point about it all is we have a special relationship with Nepal that was forged in the 1800s when we failed to subjugate them and we realised how brave and special their fighting spirit was. They in turn were later given the choice of joining the Indian army or our own, more than enough elected to join the British Army and have served bravely and loyally ever since. We were so glad of them fighting the Japanese in the jungles of Borneo et al and in many other far flung places since. I believe we, of all countries, owe the people of Nepal a special debt of thanks and WE should put them, in their hour of need, at the top of our priority list for overseas aid. Just my opinion.

Two Questions David that the present lot will ask of Nepal  a) has it OIL ...b) will I get votes for doing it........maybe I'm getting cynical in my old age .........But after serving for the third of my service with the 14/20 KH  I wore a pair of kukeries (spelling ?) on my left shoulder mess dress/blues/No2 ,as they had fought thro Italy with the brave guys from Nepal and been presented them as act of friendship ....so over the years in Hohne we had visits from them and  then went to the Falklands and did the job for us again......only time will tell but there are a lot of soldiers around to-day because they did their job for Britain

Bob, you aren't being cynical, it is a sad fact of life that our Govts more often than not reward those who despise us or who hate us and fail those who serve us. I spent 4 years of my youth living in Singapore where my pa was serving at the time. We lived in Nee Soon Barracks where 99 Bde Gurkhas were stationed. I went to school, (Alexandra Grammar) with several sons of Ghurkali officers. They were just brilliant soldiers and comrades. The Nepalese Govt claims NONE of the promised money has yet been received, some of the press reports indicate that part of the issue is the Nepalese customs, who knows what to believe!! I believe that the pictures of Nepalese people in desperate situations are real, that the country needs massive infrastructure rebuilding, that a battalion of British Ghurkas with some RE support could help massively. I also believe we could channel, say, half of this years overseas aid budget into Nepal, that would be a real turn up for the books wouldn't it!! But, like you say, there are no votes to be had from that, no potential  oil revenues or taxes to be gained, nothing............except a real helping hand to reward a country whose best young men have fought so bravely and loyally for so long for us!!

David, I echo your sentiments totally, the Nepalese nation should HAVE BEEN  given all they need IMMEDIATELY. This useless government of ours should have done only one thing, and asked how much of everything do you need, in cash, supplies, temporary water and food supplies, mobile hospitals, rescue equipment, search equipment, clothing, bedding, temporary accommodation units,(tents, mobile loos, bedding, mobile washing facilities, temporary hospital units and supplies, the list goes on). With this governments response of "it will be on its way immediately".  no chance. And what are UK government doing? - the normal :  running around chasing votes when a nation so much a part of ours is in dire need of help and support. This should all have been done immediately, and if countries around Nepal had not put up restrictions and barriers in the way of immediate assistance, and movement of supplies, the Nepalese would have been helped a lot sooner. I trust that those leaders of ours feel a great sense of embarrassment at their tardy response. I could go on for ever, but will not (for now?)
