Waterloo and Capita

February 19, 2018

So what’s  the connection? Well the current strength of the regular army stands at 78,000. 4000 short of its target and the lowest since Waterloo. Capita has the franchise for all army recruiting. Capita did away with satisfied soldiers, KAPE tours and SNCO recruiters. They are responsible for the latest adverts as well! But: figures published today show that, in 2016, 100,000 people attempted to join the army. Less than 8000 were signed up. In that year 10,800 servicemen and women left the army. Apparently thousands of applicants abandoned their efforts to enlist because of  the average 300 days of waiting, the unendless red tape etc, etc. Now, even allowing for the inevitable applicants who are unfit, those who were too old, those who come with too much baggage, the security risks etc, 8000 joining out of 100,000 applicants is hardly a success. Especially when adjudged against an ongoing 4000 shortfall. A few weeks ago the MOD heralded a new era of recruiting adverts explaining the old ones didn’t make the army appealing enough to minority groups, gays et al and they felt the adverts were part of the reason for the recruiting shortfall. Today’s announcements show those adverts were attracting over 100,000 applicants pa and Capita’s ineptness was the root cause of  the problem. So now we have got rid of the, clearly very successful, adverts and replaced them at great cost with the new ‘there’s a place for wimps in today’s army’ adverts we find out red tape and intransigence is to blame for the shortfall. Rumour has it the MOD is rethinking the idea of SNCO recruiters again. Hmm and we thought we had problems when we were serving!

The sight of a group of squaddies amongst a static display of vehicles and weapons was always a big "draw" to guys with adventure, travel & excitement in their hearts. As a former Recruiting Sgt (like Bob R was) I took full advantage of such displays, and roped in (er, recruited !) many a guy.  I can clearly remember me, as a young 14 year old, seeing   the Cheshire Regiment with a "warry" display down New Brighton, doling out slabs of compo fruit cake & boiled sweets amongst the guns & 3 Tonners  - these days they'd be accused of being paedo's !! That aside, it got me enthused into embarking on a career that lasted 25 years, with very few regrets. With regards Capita, (didn't they administer our Army Pensions at one time ?), it looks like they've gone the same way, with similar success, to the other "organisations" that have taken over the Army's housing, catering, & NAAFI's, & now recruiting . It would appear that, in the relentless pursuit of saving money, standards have fallen to rock bottom - we really did, thankfully, serve during the best years. John (JKW)

David red tape for the other 92,000 if that figure is to be believed ? my god there will be even more red tape  for the transgenders, lesbians , and gays, etc, and when you work out the amount of so called recruits from these groups per capita, ( lets not get confused with Capita) there will have been a massive loss of cash,   in returns. It is the total opposite of corbyns for the many not the few.
