You Couldn’t Make It Up

I have been avidly following the case of the police marksman who is suing his force for discrimination. We have all read of the current trend in police forces nation wide for police officers to sue their respective Forces for hurting themselves on duty, for tripping over kerbs, being traumatized by witnessing accidents, breaking their fingers on prisoners' noses et al but discrimination is an entirely different matter. One NOT to be ignored. This particular police officer was removed from police marksman's duties because he is partially DEAF. YES I SAID DEAF. seems there were health and safety concerns that he wouldn't be able to hear commands properly in situations where he was deployed. Commands like. Shoot or Don't shoot, Hold your fire, you know those sort of mundane commands that are superfluous really!! Seems his defence is partly based on the fact he has been going deaf for a while and it hasn't hindered him in carrying out his duties and to move him because he is disabled is discrimination. I understand the case was adjourned for an hour while his hearing aid was fixed!! I now await hearing of several applications from blind people wanting to become police marksmen.

Then we come to Leicestershire Police service who have devised a wholly innovative way of saving money. In future only house with EVEN numbers who have been broken into will have forensic tests carried out to determine the culprit.

Meanwhile, 5 Police Forces are chasing stories about Ted Heath being a paedo. Someone claims he was raped by Heath 56 years ago. I never particularly liked Heath and I HATE child abusers with a passion but what will this all prove?? He has been dead for 10 years and who can remember what happened 56 years ago?? Obviously not the alleged victim who says he remembers seeing pictures of Heath in his yacht at Heath's then appartment. Heath never started sailing until 7 years AFTER the alleged abuse! Shades of the similar vicious allegations made against a retired ex General who was raided at his home recently by 15 police officers at dawn, arrested, had all his computer stuff et al confiscated, his home ransacked  and his reputation shattered. the guy wasn't even in the country at the time his alleged victim says he abused him, again decades ago!! How can police, simply on the word of a single person, raid a citizen's home at dawn, arrest him, confiscate his property and throw him in a cell BEFORE they have proper proof to back up the allegation.

Don't even get me started on the £millions the Met and other Forces have wasted on chasing journalists for acquiring public interest stories of corruption et al. They arrested over 26 journos, all but ONE had their cases thrown out or were acquitted. YET, who allowed all the Asian child grooming rings to prosper for decades out of fear of being labelled racist? To be fair the POLICE were not alone in doing so!!

I really used to respect the Police, I now read far too many stories of their OTT actions, their corruption, their ambulance chasing compensation claims and their inept leaders. What has gone wrong with an institution that was so well respected almost world wide?? Perhaps I am being too hard on them> Before anyone lectures me, I do know that there are thousands of decent, brave and committed officers, it seems there are just too many bad apples and idiots in their ranks!!

David, a sad state in truth, and something the government must address quickly. If the police set up new rules for themselves, we will be living in a deadly state, with no help or protection from our once great police force. Just like the countries the migrants in Calais etc have fled from, the police are not willing to do their duty properly, and should therefore be reprimanded immediately, though these latest refusals would make the basis of a wonderful slapstick movie. If it was not so deadly.....

The police in this country have only themselves to blame for the lack of respect they now seem to generate towards themselves. Like Dave F, I used to hold them in the highest esteem, but previous experience of some of their "tactics" altered that. For example, drug dealers I knew (in my capacity as a Prison Officer) would openly tell me that, having been convicted of say, possessing £100k of heroin, would say the actual value was £400k, but £300k of it had "gone missing". The convict of course, is not going to stand up in court & say as much, he'd rather be convicted of the lower amount to lessen his sentence. Wonder who got the remaining drugs ? On other occasions, I knew of police in Birkenhead who would routinely grab a drunk off the street on a late Saturday night & beat the hell out of him in the back of their van for no real reason. With all that said, there are some "proper Policemen", but too many bad apples around that didn't seem to be there during "Dixon of Dock Green" days ! John (JKW)
