Now there is a name to conjure with Frankie!! Jack was a friend in 3DG, but he did get into some scrapes from time to time to say the least. I know nothing about him after I left HM Forces in 1969! His catch phrase was known by the 3DG and other units in Detmold.Maybe the entire world.... He was great fun to be with, always ready for whatever was going on in and out of barracks. There must be lots of past soldiers from 3DG/RSDG who must have stories of him? Tom

Tom, I was very fortunate to have Jack as my S/Sgt Tp Ldr and JKW as my Tp Sgt and tank commander both former 3DG and both ready to welcome a somewhat cocky wee Glaswegian SCOTS DG Trooper and former JLR into the Regiment. They both showed me the path to success. Jack was the hardest grafter in our Troop. As most of you will recall back in those days after an exercise you stripped the tank into a million pieces and cleaned and painted every bit before reassembling the biggest meccano set in the world . I recall being on the Tank Park in the wee sma' hours and Jack was there in his Blues, jacket off t-shirt and braces, getting stuck into cleaning the suspension there was no way that being Orderly Officer was going to stop him doing his bit and more. I also recall he rebuilt C Sqn Bar in Osnabruck almost single handedly using old mattresses and pallets to make railway carraige style tables and bench seats all done in his free time. A great guy and a great inspiration to all. I had heard once that he may have finished his time on ERE as a WO1 in Hong Kong. It would be nice to know where he was now.

JACK was in Rhq troop in Tidworth in 1960. I was for a time the 2 i/c driver. I was sent to Aden with C sqn in recce troop. We had a few laughs in Aliwal Barracks Tidworth. After Aden I was sent on the advance party to Detmold with RHQ. I lost touch with him after moving to Germany. Judd.

Jack will always be remembered for his brilliant catchphrase, which I will not repeat on here but I remember it well. Great fella, great friend, excellent company once he knew you, up for most things, naughty and nice, what a friend to have when things go wrong, cos he could always change the atmosphere within a millisecond.... He turned me into a silver ghost in Detmold when he tripped over a can of internal silver paint I had left on the turret.... I was inside at the time, cost me a fortune to replace overalls, beret, shirt et al from out delightful RQMS. big bloke that he was!!! He COULD have done it cos he felt like it!! The perils abounded when Jack was about....
