John served in Regiment 1958/70 having served in all squadrons, his last one A Sqd.

I was in C (Ind't) Sqn in Aden in 1960/61. We used to have half of the sqn at sea on an LST, usually 6 weeks at a time. While doing some beach landings up the gulf on HMS Messina on 11 Feb, this plane from RAF Sharja attempted to land on the beach. You can see the result!

We had to load it on the rhino which was used to assist in landings on a shallow beach, and tow it across the gulf to Sharja. After unloading the plane we went ashore for some much needed track bashing on some concrete hard standing.

Johnny Holden was our driver at the time (c/s 34)  He misjudged the waves as we reversed off the rhino and got a thorough soaking.

Regards,

John.

Queens Parade 1965

The print below is of a painting by John King, a military artist, of the march past which shows 'C' Sqn, 3DG, with the rest of the Brigade in the background.
The photo on  Mick Stanleys's is almost a match other than being taken from a slightly different position.
I now have a name to tell everyone who I tell about the painting.
Another small item in relation to this print - I out-bid Ronny Johnston for it at a local auction about 9 years ago.
