I would be interested to read views on Jamie Carragher’s recent actions apropos the spitting incident.

Much as I rate Jamie Carragher as both a former great player and TV pundit, his act of spitting at the car being driven by a mocking pillock is indefensible. Although the grubby tabloid headlines stated he spat at a 14 year old girl, this was incorrect - I've watched the video clip, and he spat at the car - it was filmed by the driver I think (surely an offence too ?), and the 14 year old girl was clearly heard telling the "snapper" to turn it off almost immediately. Totally unacceptable by Carragher, despite feeling raw after the result & being goaded by the pillock, he should not have reacted in that manner - will he get sacked by Sky ? I hope not, he has apologised profusely, and as he says, he wants to be judged by his "25 years of service rather than 5 seconds of madness". John (JKW)

I was certain your love of Liverpool FC and all things thereof would not mask your condemnation of JC’s action which was despicable. I was of course proven right. I have watched the video several times also. He didn’t spit at the child, I’m not even sure he spat at anyone or anything, it was just an expression of disgust, a vile and filthy expression nonetheless. He claims he couldn’t see the child and that is entirely possible. He also claims there was much more  to the goading than we know about! Umm, not entirely sure about that. BUT I wasn’t there! The event started off amicably with a wave to him and a wave back. The Man U fan could have settled for a quick jibe and Carragher would have let it go but he had to continue and meant to goad him. Carragher clearly couldn’t have known he was being filmed either, if he did his spitting was even more of a death wish. So, should he be sacked by SKY. My thoughts are absolutely not. If I was his SKY paymaster I would offer him the chance to go on television  and make an unmitigated  public apology and then let the matter drop. I confess in my lifetime I have committed acts of which I am deeply ashamed. I suspect very many other people also fall into that category. When emotions are running high and anger overcomes rational thinking sh*t happens. This was a sh*t day and action by Carragher. I would hate to be judged by my very few past misdeeds so I am hesitant to condemn a person for an entirely out of character, emotional  reaction. Condemn the deed but Carragher’s public contrition and record deserves some mitigation of his character and long record in sport. As an aside two offences were committed. The spitting is a public order offence maybe even technically an assault. The driver of the other car committed a moving traffic offence by filming whilst in control of a motor vehicle.

Suspended, almost inevitable in this day and age I suppose. Am I alone in thinking the haste at which people lose their jobs because of a minor misdemeanour is becoming crazy? His apologies and atonement for his action have been fulsome, unmitigatingly open and honest and he has self flagellated himself publicly. There are plenty of other ways he can be held to account without robbing him of his employment. Even the police services now no longer automatically sack an officer for a minor offence. It was a moment of madness, a loss of self control, an act he will never repeat. He deserves to be held to account for what he did but we seem to have lost any sense of proportionality, any sense of ‘punishment fitting the crime’ logic. The family involved seem to have done the opposite and accepted his apology and asked for him not to be sacked. Maybe the dad should have thought about that before posting the video for the whole world to see. It might also have saved him a visit from Mr Plod apropos his own offence.

My neighbour, an avid reader of scum newspapers, tells me it says that "the 14 year old girl had to wash the spit out of her hair" !! Absolute nonsense, and the lying journalists should be held to account - that's not just fake news, it's downright lying to the public through sensationalist headline grabbing  crap. John (JKW)
