Getting your money back

July 27, 2020

Here’s one for all you travellers, for Easter this year I had my daughter and her daughters booked to fly Manchester to Cork for Easter with Aer Lingus then lockdown bingo no flights etc ,I was lucky as I always pay on line with my MasterCard. That lot took about 5 weeks to get a voucher with a 10% extra in value €380 to use at a later date . Then back in December we’d booked a hotel in Florida for 2 weeks for a Disney experience again MasterCard ,€368 this time I’d spoke to hotel and they were happy to move booking to next September but Agoda hotels said no way we’d lose our money even tho flights, visas are not going ,so MasterCard came up trumps again, this time I excepted the cash back on the card in credit.Theres only one more trip we’ve booked using MasterCard and that’s Goa next January and over 2 k this time and as you may have seen reports on India they are having a bad time with this virus. We are hoping that it’ll be sorted for our holiday in Jan/Feb and March, fingers crossed,at least that one is on MasterCard too. So for all your holidays get it on your credit card not your visa ,good luck ,and keep safe.

Not just for travellers either, Bob. I recently had some major landscaping done to our front & back gardens, & payment( about £6k)was requested as 50% deposit, & the remainder on completion, but all paid by bank transfer. I insisted I was only willing to pay by credit card, & after some "discussion" back & forth (!!), it was agreed upon. It was a firm I'd not dealt with before, & despite glowing reviews (which, as you know, can be false), I felt uneasy paying by bank transfer, which has no comeback if it it goes wrong. As it happened, all went really well & we're so very pleased with the results ( all completed during the early days of the lockdown in brill weather), but I just felt a lot "safer" knowing my money was secured by using the credit card system - whenever possible, the best advice is always use the credit card for any major transactions, but pay it off before the interest kicks in !
