Grenfell

June 4, 2018

Many harrowing details and stories are emerging from this terrible fire. Many stories of supreme bravery and fortitude are also apparent.  The London Fire Brigade were undoubtedly at the forefront of many of those acts of heroism. Some of those fire fighters went into that burning inferno several times to rescue people, risking their lives to do so. They rescued at least 31 people who would likely otherwise have died. BUT:  did their Commanders’ orders for residents to stay put cost the 79 lives that WERE lost ? Certainly many of the surviving families think so. Certainly the Brigade realised the orders were wrong after some  2 or more hours and rescinded them. The combustible cladding, the new non flameproof windows and the non compliant fire doors caused the fire in that tower block to spread as quickly as it did. But it seems highly likely most if not all of the deaths were avoidable and were resultant from the orders of the Fire Brigade. Now, those orders were clearly  given with the best of intentions and followed long established practices for tower block fires. Had the Grenfell tower not been clad in combustible cladding the advice may well have been sustainable and the right thing to do. But there is likely to be no escape from the current indications that the Fire Brigade’s tactics rather than the cladding actually resulted in those deaths and that is an entirely unpalatable truth to face. I hope the London Fire Brigade does the right thing and is completely open and truthful about their tactics and advice on that night. I can’t help feeling that might not be the case, perhaps I am doing them an injustice. I hope so.
