Motorway Closures

April 4, 2018

Yesterday morning on the M62, near Howden in Yorkshire, a lorry carrying a mobile home crashed through the central reservation and collided head on with an oncoming car. The mobile home was dislodged onto the motorway. The driver of the car later died. The lorry driver was seriously hurt. This accident happened at about 10 am. The motorway was closed in both directions until the early hours of the next morning. The traffic chaos was indescribable. Many motorists were stranded for over 6 hours. Now, I understand preservation of life and tending to the injured has to be the main priority. I get that accident investigators need to gather evidence. I accept recovery can take time, the road has to be cleaned and cleared etc etc. But can that really take 16 plus hours? I have mentioned this before, I cannot understand how most European countries get their motorways up and running again within a far shorter time after accidents. In Germany I have seen an Autobahn back in operation with at least one lane within two -three hours of a multiple car accident with deaths and injuries. How long can it take to get a crane to shift the mobile home, recovery of the two vehicles and clear at least one lane. The people in the two vehicles were seemingly away from the scene within a couple of hours. I don’t understand it, perhaps I am missing one or more salient points?
