Who Holds All The Trumps?

June 11, 2018

They say a picture paints a thousand words. The photograph of a beleaguered Donald Trump, sat facing an array of G7 leaders and their aides, arms folded across his chest as a stern looking Angela Merkel clearly reads him the riot act, says it all. This man is clearly a maverick, a man who tears up the international political rule book, a man who succumbs to fits of ill temper in place of tact and diplomacy, a man not to be trusted, a power crazy POTUS. And yet.........for all his bluster, all his rhetoric, his name calling, petty Twittering etc etc he says it how he feels it is. He acts in what HE considers is his country’s best interests, he faces down his detractors, rids himself of any unsupportive staff regardless of their position and party, in essence he leads and makes sure everyone knows he is the leader. The G7 debacle was a clever ploy ahead of the Singapore summit meeting with his North Korean counterpart. Trump set out to show Kim Jong Il and the world he is a resolute and strong President. Trudeau unfortunately became the tool to make that happen. Trump is a megalomaniac, no doubt about that, but if TM had just 50% of his resolve, his strength of character and his willingness to take difficult decisions we would be in a far better place with Brexit. Boris said something similar recently and I can only concur with him. Rather a strong, determined and tough leader making perhaps some stupid statements from time to time than the weak, ineffectual and inept leader we have at present. If Brexit continues along current lines I forecast a vote of no confidence in TM at a crucial moment in the proceedings. There are so many forthcoming parliamentary opportunities for such a vote to occur. Any one of the dozen or so impending votes on Brexit could become her catalyst, her Maggie Thatcher moment. If that happens who knows what will follow. Think about it, an already minority Government, no clear successor, bitter partisan divisions within the Tory ranks and sat there with no idea of how to improve matters, a gleeful, gloating  Jeremy Freaking Corbyn. Don’t get me wrong, TM’s dithering, her weakness and pandering to everyone IS a huge danger to our Brexit outcomes but IF she goes who knows what will follow. What a sorry state to have gotten ourselves into. If Trump is even halfway successful in brokering lasting peace between North and South Korea, if he can even remotely tame the Korean Crackpot, he will gain such kudos that any post Brexit US trade deals we might have thought would be forthcoming will be dictated entirely by him. So, I guess Trump currently holds all the Trump cards. At least for the time being.

As a footnote to the above, Kim Jong Il is of course the now dead father of Kim Jong Un. Lol. I say that before someone corrects me. Lol.

He will retain the experts who designed & made 'em, plus no doubt, hide the materials & resources to ensure production could be restarted, but to get the massively damaging sanctions to his country dropped, I reckon he WILL, at least on the surface, publicly give up his nuclear arsenal. After all, as a deterrent his plan has worked - the only North Korean leader to get a face to face with an American President, something his forebears wanted but never managed to do. Don't forget too, he's now had a taste of Western civilisation in Singapore & will be thinking " I'm having some of this "!! John (JKW)

If Kim were to concede too much, I mean really mean it and try to implement a total destruction of North Korea’s nuclear capability I’m not sure we wouldn’t see a military coup there. The upper echelons of North Korea have a  deep rooted hatred of the USA and of South Korea, I believe that, and their extreme communist doctrines, don’t bode well for any actual reduction in their nuclear development or indeed a complete destruction of their nuclear capability. John, you mention Kim getting a taste of western civilisation, from reports I have read he lives a life of absolute luxury already and has most of the trappings of western civilisation hidden behind his well guarded walls. Your point about him securing the meeting with POTUS is well made, it will be a major feather in his cap and gain him massive kudos amongst his people. If he then returns home to announce he met the President and dictated the meeting etc etc he will be a hero to them. I don’t think there’s a hope in hell of him actually agreeing to truly dismantle his nuclear weapons or the further development of them. I hope I’m wrong. We’ll know soon enough!
