Can anyone explain to me the difference between "Died on service" and "Killed in Action"

I wonder how many were related to serving members in Scots DG as I can see quite a few familiar names.

Also, I wonder what the average age was. As a young soldier I never gave death much thought or the age they were etc but now, the age I am now! Married, a grand parent, times like these I certainly give these guys much thought and forever respect.

May they Rest in Peace.

Good of you to respond Cliff. I imagine Death on Service refers to those who succumbed from the various tropical diseases which were rife in Burma and dirty drinking water. Then there would have been accidents involving vehicles driving in treacherous conditions on unmade roads, Even in our day Ferret Mk2s were responsible for a death a fortnight when they turned over due to the turret making them top heavy.

Couldn't agree more with all the sentiments above - we owe so much to so many.........RIP for all those affected

With regards the Mk 2 Ferrets Freddy, we were all aware of the danger yet used to sit on the back flap at every opportunity (ie, no one watching !) blissfully & without a care in the world, especially in Cyprus (as in D Sqn from Edinburgh with the UN,) sunshine blazing and no apparent enemy danger, we sat on the back flap until high into the Troodos Mountains when it got a tad cold so we hunkered down into the turret !

Sorry not been on here for a while, been in & out of hospital a few times lately, nothing too serious mainly pneumonia which comes & goes. Whenever I escape the clutches of the NHS (bless 'em) it takes me ages to reorg myself into the routine I was used to, by which time an ambulance arrives again (joking, it's not that bad). Best wishes to all   John (JKW)
