Colchester/AWOL

Well, have just served my time for being AWOL, in Colchester naturally(only kidding !). It's nickname has stood the test of time (Colly) which I'm sure many on here will recognise, although the place itself and the regime has changed out of all recognition. I once visited the place as RSM because at the time our Colonel of the Regiment (General Arthur ?) shared the position with MCTC (Mil Corrective Trg Centre) . It was at a time of transition  for the Centre, so I experienced the old camp & regime compared to what was coming. WHAT a difference !! Not only did the food (and quantities) improve, the facilities and accommodation brought into the 21st century, from the Nissen Huts & coal boilers to proper buildings with rooms and furniture, to hot daily showers being on offer too. Whether the end results were improved too from the soldiers ending their sentence I know not - I do know from my experience at Regimental level that whenever a 3DG/ SCOTS DG returned from Colly they returned as better soldiers, but that was from the "old" system - being "old school" myself I doubt the relaxed discipline in the new camp would get the same results. Anyone know different ? I'd be really interested to know.   John (JKW)
