Heroism and Sacrifice

As you guys remember from your time in the Regiment we had a BIG PARADE In April on the 13 th to be precise it to CELEBRATE a BATTLE HONOUR for the part the Regiment played in the battle for NUNSHIGUM . Well I’m at my daughter’s apartment and years ago she had nicked one of my Regimental books ,this was written by a Stephen Woods and is about the time and battle of the Regiments time in Burma. Now I’ve got my hands on this book and reading it now 50 odd  years since was written has me so PROUD of what these guys did under very fire from the Japs . It’s even got the grave stone of soldiers who perished during the battle . It’s funny because back in the day as a young soldier all we did was complain about NUNSHIGUM  parades especially if you never served in B Squadron.Yes a soldiers life at times a real pain but when you read and absorb what previous generation of soldiers did consider yourself lucky all I did was N.I. A couple of times.

Didn’t he write ‘Those Terrible Grey Horses’  as well Bob or is that a different Stephen Woods?  The courage of those men that you write of is legendary. We (I at any rate) often wondered if those of our era and beyond could really step up to the mark when the chips were down and emulate the stoicism under fire or in battle as our  forebears did. My experiences in NI, Zimbabwe and The Gulf War allayed any doubts I might have had.
