I DO know the efforts of Freddy to keep the site alive [and JKW of course] are definitely not repaid in kind by members’ contributions.So why did I stop contributing? I write to provoke comments to my posts. I write to promote conversations. Other than Freddy, JKW and Cliff [ at times] I have no idea who read my posts. Did anyone else read them? What did they think of my words? Who knows! Not me! The site probably doesn’t have the funding to record ‘hits’ on individual posts so we could see how many members are actually reading them. I know Freddy collates numbers of members’ logins.
I am active on 3 other sites. On one I mentor and advise on pancreatic cancer to a small but globally eclectic membership. I am currently mentoring someone in Adelaide on a 1-1 basis. I find it cathartic. I am also a member of a ‘retirees’ site where my ramblings also seem to find favour with a globally diverse audience. 6k+ readership acknowledgements and 6-700 responses to my posts are not uncommon. What is the point of writing if no-one reads what one writes?
The Scots Greys fb page and Scotland’s Cavalry Past and Present both have fairly active and regular contributors. The former has a membership age group similar to the 3DG site, the latter has a slightly more eclectic membership including some youngsters in their mid- late 60s and early 70s. 3DG fb site fares little better than this one.
Despite my ‘treachery’ in joining the ranks of the readers not writers, I would hate to see the site wither on the stem and die.In closing I share a cleaned up version of a post that popped up on my facebook page.
An advert appeared in a Newcastle local rag seeking a male assistant in a ladies beauty parlour that specialised in female genital waxing. The job entailed [inter alia] helping ladies disrobe, preparing them for waxing and massaging cooling balm into their ‘private’ areas post waxing. An excited Geordie lad answered the Ad. He was asked if he could travel to Penzance in the far south of the country. He asked if that was where the job is. ‘No said the owner that’s where the back of the queue is for an interview’.Stay safe everyone.
